Waterloo city council made its decision Monâ€" day night after reviewing seven potential ward boundary models that were brought to council‘s attention by both Waterloo city staff and local citâ€" izens. The decision was made to realign the ward map with the two new councillor seats that will be added to city council in next year‘s municipal election. Council heard recommendations from Waterloo citizens, the majority which were requesting to merge the universities together into one ward. Council debated over three preferred models, one which would include Wilftid Launier Univerâ€" More than 700 Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo residents took part in the 25th annuaTTerry-Fox Run Sunday afternoon, starting at Bechtel Park $55,000, which is a $20,000 increase over last year‘s total. This year‘s event marked a quarter century since Fox‘s Marathon of Hope. Anthony Piscitelli, the president and CEO of Wilfrid Laurier University‘s student publications, spoke to council about which boundary options would best represent the students. "I really felt the universities should have been kept together (in one ward)," Piscitelli said in an interview, citing another proposed ward boundâ€" ary option which he said would have made more sense in representing the students in Waterloo. Piscitelli had told council during earlier disâ€" cussions that grouping the universities together in one ward would make a lot more sense because there is already such a low voter turnout among university students. "I think fundamentally council is in an enviâ€" ous position of picking out three models that would quite significantly improve representation in the city of Waterloo," he told city council. Think. "They should have kept the universities together because it‘s quite obvious that students don‘t vote. The idea that students would domiâ€" nate a ward isn‘t accurate," Lindt said. "I think putting the universities together in one ward might have also encouraged younger people to run for council in the future. It would be lovely to have a younger person on council."
