The program also faciliâ€" tates a field study placement that allows students to take charge of their education by gaining handsâ€"on experiâ€" ence while attending uniâ€" versity. "This offers the opportuâ€" nity for students to learn experientially. By broadenâ€" ing their base of experience, students are able to put what they have learned into practice and develop a new context forâ€" evaluating course readings and lecâ€" tures," Funk said. As a result of this opporâ€" tunity, students have choâ€" sen placements ranging ‘from working as a conflict resolution mediator in Kitchener to doing commuâ€" nity development work in the Philippines, assisting human rights lawyers in the Middle East, planning women‘s advocacy group events in Washington and becoming further educated on militarism in South Africa. Defining a career path for students is not the main focus of the program. Instead, it seeks to "empowâ€" er them to become peaceâ€" makers in whatever line of work they choose to pursue â€" whether that is peace advocacy, humanitarian work or engagement with local efforts to strengthen community," Funk said. PACS director Lowell Ewert said students graduâ€" ate and go on to "many fields â€" grad school, civil service... and apply the valâ€" ues and principles that help to influence all environâ€" ments." Unlike other programs, "we are not training stuâ€" dents for a particular career, but rather to apply this into everything they do," he added. Students were pleased to hear that the BA plans were approved recently, with some even delaying their graduation as a result. "For me, PACS was the most meaningful part of university and I was really excited to be able to major in it," said Dora Marie Goulet, who decided to postpone graduation in order to receive the PACS major. In her third year studying PACS, Sarah McGrath is like others in the program exploring options of furthes education, possibly gradu ate school or a master‘s degree. She hopes the pro gram will lead to a fulfifling career in mediation while Goulet is considering the possibilities tfor peacemak ing.
