It‘s the Freshman 15â€" the notorious pounds that students put on during their first year of college â€" and they can be even scariâ€" er than tuition bills. Many students pick up bad eating habits during their initial year away from home and find that weight gain is a subsequent result of this eatâ€" ing freedom. "When I first got to college, I definitely gained weight," says Pamela Fischbein, a 21â€"yearâ€"old junior at Ohio State University in Columbus. "A lot of our dining hall food is covered with fattening creams and sauces, so 1 started to eat sushi, salads and canned soup instead. By winter quarter, I was beginning to lose weight." However, there‘s more to being healthy than just mainâ€" taining a wellâ€"balanced diet. Exercise is just as imporâ€" tant, but regular workouts can be difficult to fit into a student‘s hectic daily schedule. When you think about it. it‘s pretty unbelievable that the Freshman 15 aren‘t the Freshman 40‘ Luckily, with a few simple lifestyle changes and conscious dietary choices, students can attain healthy behaviors that they can maintain throughout college and even after graduation. 1. Ice cream is not a breakfast food. Just because you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, does not mean you should. While dining halls offer tons of fast food and highâ€"fat options, there are just as many healthy chaices. Of course, this doesn‘t mean you can never have a burger and fries. You can split a burger with a friend. pass on the fries and fill up on salad with lowâ€"fat dressing. 2. It‘s not a contest to see who can eat the most. Allâ€" youâ€"canâ€"eat dining halls can be a college student‘s (stomach‘s) worst nightmare. You can‘t decide between mashed potatoes and rice, so you decide to get both. Unfortunately, many students fall into that trap and fill their tray with every food that tempts them. Instead of meandering through all the food stations to figure out what to have for dinner, think about what healthy fare you want to eat before entering the dining hall and stick to your plan. Also, pay attention to portion sizes because even healthy foods have calories. 3. Exercising is a good thing. Students often want to work out, but they may not have extra time. One option is to take an exercise class for credit. That way, you‘ll have no choice but to work out because it will be built into your schedule for you. Also, there are probaâ€" bly a few times in your weekly schedute where some activities could be replaced by a quick workout. For example, instead of meeting a friend for coffee, meet for a walk. Or if you sit in front of the TV to watch "Desâ€" perate Housewives" every Sunday, watch it at the gym while riding a stationary bike. Most universities offer students access to campus exercise facilities for free or for a nominal fee. Take advantage of that perk! 4. Drink up. Many times when you‘re feeling hungry. you might just be thirsty. Drink a glass of water, wait a half an hour and then see if your stomach is still growlâ€" ing. 5. Small changes can equal big results. A lateâ€"night pizza here of & box of cookies there all add up. By skipâ€" ping the midnight food binges, cutting out sodas and walking to class instead of using the campus bus, you‘re on your way to leading a healthier lifestyle. The small changes really can make a difference.
