The report also detailed the results of a questionnaire distributed to residents in a 150â€"metre radius of the park. The majority of responâ€" dents indicated they did not want the light and thought the area was safe. Instead of constructing a security light, the report sugâ€" gested removing bushes, pruning trees and relocating a large tree to allow better visibility for an existing streetlamp. As well, Pastrik recomâ€" mended including contact information for park serâ€" vices at the park‘s entrance so park users could report illegal activity more easily. In the long term, the report recommended more community involvement in improving the security of the park and the surrounding area. Kartechner and 10 of her students still made, in her words, a "last attempt to urge the councillors to view this issue from a child‘s perâ€" spective." Fhe class began investiâ€" gating the possibility of a security light for the park in November when the body of a murdered man was discovâ€" ered there. Student Shannon Craig tried to allay the concern that if Sandowne Park was given a security light, other parks would want one as well: "We are not like the other 64 parks; we are willâ€" ing to fundraise for ours." Other students were apprehensive about Pastrik‘s suggestion to prune or remove vegetation to give the streetlight greater visibilâ€" ity within the park. "Why cut down trees and what little nature we already have to get a little light," Marina Triebe asked. Skye Reid pleaded with the council, "It would mean a lot for us just to have a light." Despite the students‘ concerns, the ward councilâ€" lor _ representing _ the Sandowne Park area, Gary Kieswetter, said, "It‘s a very safe place to live in." This claim, however, was later disputed by Sue Rickâ€" ert, a delegate who lives around the corner from the park. Rickert, while describing various criminal activity she had witnessed near home, said, "I can‘t get over the things I‘ve seen in this neighbourhood."
