Region launches annual West Nile virus campaign egion of Waterloo RI’uhlic Health has aunched their 2005 West Nile virus (WNyv) eduâ€" cation campaign. Waterloo Public Health will ance again monitor the presence of the virus through the testing of dead birds, particularty crows and blue jays. Sightings of all species of dead birds should be reportâ€" ed to the West Nile virus hotline at 883â€"2086. Crows and blue jays are highly susceptible to West Nile virus and are an imporâ€" tant reservoir. WNv is a mosquitoâ€" borne virus that was first identified in Waterloo Region in the summer of 2001. WNy can cause illness in both humans and ani mals. WNyv is spread to peo ple through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosqui toes become infected when they bite a bird or other ant mal that carries the virus The virus does not spread directly from individual to individual. Only about 20 per cent of people bitten by an infected mosquito will become ill and exhibit symptoms. The symptoms, which include mild headache. muscle aches, still neck, swollen glands and skin rash, can occur three to 15 days folâ€" lowing the bite of an infectâ€" ed mosquito. Approximately one out of 88 infected indiâ€" viduals â€" may â€" develop swelling of the brain. Remember, West Nile virus has been identified in a wide range of ages. To fight the bite, you need to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. To do this, prevent outdoor objects from collecting water â€" drain cans, conâ€" tainers, pool covers toys, buckets, and barrels. Also, dispose of discarded tires. Change water in bird baths every other day and store canoes, wheelbarrows and wading pools upside down. Protect yourself from the bite by wearing longâ€" sleeved shirts, pants, lightâ€" coloured cloths and mini mize your time spent out doors during dusk and dawn You can also apply a repelient containing DEFE1, although you should use the least concentrate needed for that time outside and never use it on a child under six months old For more information call the region‘s West Nile virus information line at 883â€"2086 ot visit the web site at www.region .waterâ€" loo.on.caiph â€" _ select Resources from the menus and click on West Nile virus
