Putting his skills to work Uhe trme is rnight, and were Inoking Torward to implementing this pro graim,. he said "I‘ve never ridden a bus, and I likely never will." Welker said it‘s unfair to impose this mandatory tuition fee on students who won‘t use the local transit system. It‘s not optional," he said. "It‘s going to impact all student, even those with cars and bikes who don‘t take the bus. T don‘t think that‘s fair." But Creuttin sard the pro gram is a good fit with the region‘s growth manage ment strategy that encour ages people to walk, bike and use public transit "There‘s no need for this program," said Steven Welkâ€" er, outgoing president of the WLU Students‘ Union. "We have a really unique camâ€" pus that‘s surrounded by everything we need, includâ€" ing adequate housing. The program will be subâ€" sidized through the school‘s tuition fees, which means each student will pay $39.50 for the eightâ€"month term â€" a fact that doesn‘t sit well with one student. WLU students voted 69 per cent in favour of the program in a referendum last February. "The program expands the students‘ opportunities to travel all over the region," he said. "That could open new options for them in terms of partâ€"time jobs, entertainment, and perhaps better quality and more affordable housing choices. "It gives the administraâ€" tion the opportunity to reduce the school‘s parking demands, which is a real plus. "And for us at the region, it helps us meet our goals of improving transit ridership."
