The order of finish of the top 5 from participating universities was: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, Duke University, University of Waterloo and California Institute of Technology (Caltech). UW‘s talented mathematics students among the leaders in North America Waterloo has been in the top 10 in the Putnam 15 times in the past 16 years and was first in 1999. Of the top 74 students in this year‘s Putnam, 11 were from Canadian schools and five are at the University of Waterloo. All 11 were active participants in the Canadian Mathematics Competitions which were created by UW‘s Faculty of Mathematics in 1963.
