Waterloo city council opred to defer the issue until the end of June Monday night. instructing city staff to investigate the matter and report back with a formal recommendation either for or against a light in the park. Council‘s decision came after hear ing from a class of Grade 5 and 6 stu dents from the school, as well as oth ers both for and against having night ly lighting at the park. The students have spent the last few months lobbying for a light in the park after the body of 34â€"yearâ€"old David Johnston was found in the greenspace last November. Johnston‘s wife. Lana MacDonald. and an acquaintance. Richard Davidâ€" son, were charged with firstâ€"degree murder in March. The killing was added to the small list of recent incidents at the park, which also includes a suicide that occurred a few years ago and regular discoveries of weapons. broken beer bottles and drug paraphernalia such as crack pipes and needles. The incidents have left students and some neighbours fearful of what happens in the area after the lights go out.
