ome local university Sfludvms have been granted the unique opportunity to use the skills they learned in the classâ€" room to create an authentic marketing _ campaign., thanks to an internship program with General Motors of Canada Ltd. The entire class thought it was a great learning expeâ€" rience, said Lisa Intini, 22, a business administration student at Wilfrid Laurier University. "We always do cases in business, but this was actuâ€" ally a handsâ€"on project," she said. The students in the fourthâ€"year _ marketing communications class were divided into two groups. Each was assigned the task of forming a marketing company and holding an event to promote brand awareness for the new Chevrolet Cobalt among its target audience: males and females between the ages of 18 and 24. One group, called Ignite Marketing. hosted an onâ€" campus event on March 10; the other group is organizâ€" ing an offâ€"campus event to be held at the final Rangers game of the season. The teams were responâ€" sible for all aspects of the campaigns, _ including researching, budgeting and implementing its strategies GM â€" supplied both groups with $3,100 to fund Program allows business students to learn more than book smarts th J saimek Ormston Lor Pre C Trconr vuperating expenses tor this project, which is worth 50 pet cent of each student‘s mark in the class. "We made all the posters and came up with all the ideas," said Intint "Usually in cases, we don‘t do the implementaâ€" tion aspect, but in this proâ€" ject, we actually got to see it come together on the day of the event." Intini, who aspires to one day have a job in pubâ€" lic relations, said working for Ignite Marketing taught her many valuable lessons. "It was great to see how much media contact you have to establish, followâ€" ups you have to make and deadlines you have to meet," she said. Her only complaint with the experience was GM‘s lack of involvement. "They were not very helpful," she said. "They were supposed to attend our first presentation but they weren‘t there." She said the feedback from the company would have provided guidance for the team as to whether or not they were on the right track. "Basically, we did a lot of it on our own," she said. However., Prof. Shirley Lichti oversaw the entire event and was instrumental in its success. according to Intini. "Our professor is amazâ€" ing. Without her, 1 don‘t know if there would have even been an event," said Intini. "She was at the onâ€"camâ€" pus event all day and you can just tell she really cares about the students." WLU business student Lisa Intini says the GM internship has taught her many valuable lessons. Ignite Marketing arranged to have both a Cobalt sedan and coupe parked outside one of the residences for the occasion. They also ran games throughout the day and provided a barbecue tunch. A similar and somewhat more sinister phenomena has started to become more comâ€" mon in the digital world, and it has been dubbed "phishing". Phishing is the Internet equivalent of a person who comes to your door claiming to be from "The Gas Compaâ€" ny" and asking for a copy of your gas bill to verify that you are getting the best rate. At first glance he or she seems sincere. I‘ve fallen for this tactic once, but I‘m more cautious now. I ask myself, if this person is from my gas company, why do they need to see my gas bill? If they are not from my gas company, why are they knocking on my door when I‘m trying to get the kids to bed? There has to be a better way to get my business. My suspicions and questions are just as helpful when carried over to the digital world. While I don‘t currently get very a many SPAM messages in my eâ€" BITS OI‘ \ mail inâ€"box, the number is increasing. LIFE | Recently 1 received a note claiming that my eBay account could be suspended if I didn‘t "reâ€" update" my account information by following a link. This message was easy for me k. ; a to spot as a phishing attempt K â€" sA because any dealings I‘ve had with E. wl eBay had been performed through e o a different eâ€"mail address. But, 7 many people could be fooled by a MICHAEL similar message. For example, HIEMSTRA about a year ago several eâ€"mail virus variants made their rounds and appeared to be sent from your system administrator or IT department. They claimed that your password needed to be reset. If you hadn‘t updated the patch level of your system. following the proâ€" vided link could have caused your computer to become infected with the virus which would proceed to spread to others from your computer. The onâ€"line technology encyclopedia at www.webopeâ€" dia.com defines phishing as the "...act of sending an eâ€"mail to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information..." which amounts to a form of social engineering.
