Aju'w fact sheet, Fish ‘acts for Families: Choose Fish Low in Mercury was released March 4 by the Region of Waterloo Public Health. Region releases fish facts for families It is meant to encourage people â€" especially pregâ€" nant women, women of childbearing age and chilâ€" dren under 14 years â€"â€" to freâ€" quently consume fish, but to be cautious about certain types like albacore tuna and other large, predatory fish. Fish has high nutritional value. It is a rich source of protein. vitamins, minerals and omegaâ€"3 fats which are essential for growth and neutral development. Some fish, canned tuna in particuâ€" lar, is widely consumed and usually inexpensive. However, it is possible that some pregnant women and young children may be Handsâ€"on history IENWiFER OAMSTON PMOTO exposed to potentially harmful amounts of merâ€" cury, because methyimerâ€" cury is a form of mercury in our food supply, found in some types of fish and shellâ€" fish. It can bioâ€"accumulate in tissues and potentially harm fetal and early child develâ€" opment. MethyImercury is preâ€" sent in fairly high amounts in predatory fish and canned albacore tuna, which are commonly availâ€" able in grocery stores and markets. Region of Waterloo Pubâ€" lic Health recommends that pregnant women and young children should consume at least one serving per week of fish that is low in methylmercury and high in omegaâ€"3 fatty acids: for example, "light" canned LIFESTYLE {nonâ€"albacore} tuna, sarâ€" dines, canned and frozen Pacific salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut, haddock, perch, trout, tilapia, bass, sole, scallops, shrimp and pollock. Pregnant women, those of childbearing age, and children should limit their consumption of "white" (albacore] tuna to one can per month and should avoid eating fresh or frozen predaâ€" tory fish {tuna, marlin, swordfish, shark}. Recent studies in the USA show that methylmerâ€" cury is now present in cerâ€" tain fish in higher amounts than previously indicated. In the American general population, approximately eight per cent of pregnant women have core blood mercury levels at or above the safe "reference dose". @2( Tropix" Tan )%# 133 Weber St. N. 886â€"6407 |in the Shoes 22 Plaza| o0 GIFT PACKAGES and | | M wtvidist for «dnc io wis en 1O\Y . \ 6 I ‘cv{’;’\ Buy Ten Tans for $45.
