Mary‘s Wedding opens at King Street Theatre Mary‘s Wedding is a beautifully told tale of love, in which young Mary and Charlie find each other in an old barn while seeking shelter from a prairie thunâ€" derstorm. But the year is 1914, and the First World War propels them into a tumultuous time that threatens their innocence and challenges their hopes. Mary‘s Wedding is a seamless and moving piece, about a first love that tranâ€" scends and outlasts the horâ€" rors of war to become something different altoâ€" gether. â€" Mary‘s Wedding â€" is Stephen Massicotte‘s first fullâ€"length fictional play. _ He began writing the piece about the First World War and explains that as it progressed into a love story, he found many similarities between the characters and his personal life. He found himself weavâ€" ing lines into the script from his own personal relationâ€" ships with love. Following the success of the piece, he now considers himself a playwright. "I cannot remember a play that has affected us as much during rehearsals," commented director Stuart Scadronâ€"Wattles. The awardâ€"winning theatre company has just received a $75,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation {OTF). The grant will go towards theatrical lighting equipment for the new St. Jacobs Country Playhouse, a stateâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"art performance facility currently under construction in the quaint Mennonite village of St. lacobs. Housed in the former St. Jacobs Winery and Cidery, the new theatre is slated to open this October. "We‘re very pleased to begin the new year with this tremendous news from the Ontario Trillium Foundation," says Alex Mustakas, artistic director and CEO of Drayton Entertainment. "Theatre plays an integral role in our quality of life and this grant delivers us even closer to our goal of providing the finest in theatrical entertainment to a diverse audiâ€" ence on a yearâ€"round basis." The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives $100 million annualâ€" ly in government funding generated through Ontario‘s charity casino initiative. It is one of Canaâ€" da‘s largest granting foundations, committed to building healthy and vibrant communities across Ontario. "As I‘ve said many times, Drayton Entertainment is a firstâ€"rate theatre company with an outstanding record of success," says Waterlooâ€"Wellington MPP Ted Arnott. "I‘m delighted that the Trillium Foundaâ€" tion is helping to pay for lighting equipment at the new St. Jacobs Country Playhouse." From April 1, 1999 to March 31, 2004 the Foundaâ€" tion awarded more than 7,700 grants valued at over $478 million, and provided the arts and culture secâ€" tor with $107 million in funding. The grant will go a long way towards making the dream of a new performing arts space in the region a reality. To date, Drayton Entertainment has already raised half of the funds needed for the project, which is budgeted at $3.5 million. "In the world of theatre, we all have a role to play," says Mustakas. "Every gift helps, and we are thrilled with the generous contributions that have been made so far by the Province of Ontario, as well as our vast network of corporate and community leaders.
