West side l prepares tor 1 political war g And while they're still in the middle of one fight with the city and local develop- ers over the future of Vista Hills and the Columbia Street extension, they're already worried about future develop- ment of a woodlot behind the new Sir John A. MacDonald high school that fea- lures a water recharge site for the Water- loo Moraine. embers ot the Citizens for the MPruu-L'lion of the Waterloo Moraine (CPWM) are bracing themselves for another battle aver the new Vista Hills subdivision plan coming to city council in February. The site on the Owens-McNally prop- any is part of the northern part of the recharge system that supplies the moraine aquifer. "Nature does a much better job than we can ever hope to." said Susan Smith, a member of CPWM, whose nearby farm has an environmentally sensitive protect- ed area she's working hard to preserve. The group has made some inroads in getting the Ministry of Environment to look at plans for the Columbia Street extension. and doing a full individual environmental assessment on the road- way and its impact on the moraine and the nearby environmentally sensitive protected areas like the Forested Hills. The moraine itself supplies 80 per cent of the drinking water to the area. Once a natural recharge area is lost in can never be replaced. And it's something that all the parties should be able to embrace if Waterloo is really committed in its "Environment First" policy. said Judy Greenwood- Spears. another member ofCPWM.
