Retail ' §24.99° Westvale event will see another day At Get Stuffed different hange is always a challenge for any organization, and it‘s By Tim Tavro®r For The Chronicle www.crosbyaudi.com 1175 Weber St. E., Kitchener Community Association At our annual general meeting in October, the Association held a commuâ€" nity meeting to decide what to do with our most popular annual event â€" the Victoria Day carnival and fireworks. Several factors prompted us to reconsider our plans for the event: we would soon be losing the vacant fireworks field to residential development; interest in expanding the carnival with more rides; requests from the community to add or change elements in the event; and a decline in the number of volunteers availâ€" able to organize the big day. We agreed that we wantâ€" ed to create a fun and safe family event for Westvale families and friends to conâ€" nect and enjoy, to encourâ€" age community spirit in Westvale, and to make Westâ€" vale a desirable place for families to live. With this in mind, movâ€" ing the location out of Westâ€" vale to a larger space for the 894â€"9300 carnival and a new open field for the fireworks would mean the event would lose its community feel. Thanks to the continued support of Westvale public school, we determined we could expand the carnival and still remain on the same site. We also confirmed the field would remain open for the fireworks for at least one more year. As with many volunteer organizations, funding was also a major challenge. While the fireworks were the mostâ€"loved feature of the day, and were relatively simple to organize, they are expensive, costing over $4,000 each year. Financing the fireworks then became the major effort, resulting in valuable volunteer hours dedicated to fundraising, seeking sponsorships, canvassing the neighbourhood in our famous "Toonie Drive", and holding a large silent aucâ€" tion at the carnival. Responding to these Lease For 2005 Audi A4 1.8 T quattro s599 0 DOWN PAYMENT issues, a variety of options were discussed at the meetâ€" ing, including hosting the carnival without the fireâ€" works, reducing the scale of the event, improving how the event is organized, hostâ€" ing a completely different activity, and moving the event to a different date. in the end, we decided to expand the carnival with more rides at the same locaâ€" tion and open it for the entire weekend. We also agreed to continâ€" ue the fireworks for another year, supported by more intensive and organized fundraising. To improve our chances of better weather, we hope to hold the event in the last weekend in June. Our hope is that moving it off the long weekend would enable more Westvale residents to attend. An active campaign to recruit more volunteers to organize the event will begin this month with a signâ€"up at our group meeting. Per Month*
