City denies negligence in dirty water issue Continued from page 1 insurance pool, in the fall, and finally got an answer D&c. 30. The insurer demied her claimâ€" in fact, the letter went on to deny the city was liable for any of her water prabâ€" lems. in light of the fallout of the Walkerion water tragedy, as well as her home‘s close proximity to the Waterloo Moraine, a source of local groundwater, Decker can‘t betieve the city would shitk its responsibility. It‘s not like the city didn‘t know there were problems with the water before, Deckâ€" er said, since they‘ve used samples from her house for water testing. She claims she was even once told not to use the water at all because the chlorine was so high it wasâ€" n‘t safe for consumption. "Quite often after it‘s filthy you‘ll smell chlorine when you turn on the tap," she said. "And the guy testâ€" ing it said, ‘Don‘t drink it, this would be unsafe for swimming pool levels."" The last straw came in November when construcâ€" tion caused sediment to contaminate the area‘s water lines. and a boiled water alert was issued for her neighbourhood. The city told Decker she didn‘t have to call and comâ€" plain each time because there‘s nothing they can do about it. With so much conâ€" struction in her area, includâ€" ing the completion of Sir John A. McDonald causing a particular drain, sediment was being pulled through the pipes. "They told me that so much water was being taken out of the system that whatâ€" ever is left in the pipes is coming into your house," said Decker. "That‘s when I was told to put a claim in with the city." And with the claim denied, Decker is looking for answers. She‘s called everyone from her city councilior, Jim Boiger, who wonders if her business insurance could cover the loss, to the Ontario Clean Water Authority and the Ministry of Municipal She was even told by Waterloo MPP Elizabeth Witmer‘s office to keep track of the discoloured water and to call the health departâ€" ment on particularly bad days. "They said my dates don‘t match up with the dates I‘ve called to complain," said Decker, about the city‘s response. "Plus the lines in the area receive regular rouâ€" tine maintenance, which means the city isn‘t negliâ€" gent. _ _"So who is negligent then? Why is the water comâ€" ing out of the tap the way it is? "They‘re basically telling me that I‘m out $5,000 and, as a small business, this could put me out of busiâ€" nessâ€" They don‘t care and they say it‘s not their fault." Tim Anderson, the city‘s director of public works, said he would look into Decker‘s file and the complaints she‘s lodged about water quality in her neighbourhood. He said the city is defiâ€" nitely responsible for the water lines, although the water itself is supplied by the Region of Waterloo. "From time to time we have disturbances in the system throughout the city," said Anderson. "Watermain breaks to changes in the flow pattern in water can cause a disturâ€" "We would do our best to try to remedy the situation, whether it means coming out or flushing mains. Many times we can identify what the cause is if it‘s a main break or road construction. There will be some disturâ€" bance and we can address those things." * Energy * Headaches * Insomnia (sleep difficulties} * Nervousness/Irmitability * Sinus & Allergies * Neck Pain * Arm and Wnist Pain (Carpal Tunnal Syndrome) * Digestive Disorders * Lower Back Pain * Numbness & Tingling (Arms & Legs) + Leam the keys to Healtt/Weliness + Leam how to improve the quality of your life & Live Longer + Laam how to take control of your own health + Healthy lifestyle requires making TIME a prority + Address the Cause. not the "symptoms" When: Wed.
