In those days we called the soccer tournaments "socc-a-thons". The game was mainly played by the sons and daughters of recent immigrants to Canada who brought their passion for soccer from the British isles and Europe. Games were very interesting cultural events as the dads would shout instructions to the players in thick Scottish, English. Irish. German, Italian. Portuguese. Polish and Yugoslavian accents _.- languages from all over the world. The fun part was when the coach would tell the player one thing and the dad would tell the player something else in their native tongue so the coach wouldn't understand. The player, as if often the case still today, would do what he or she thought was best. There are approximately 4.420 children under the age of 18 participating in Waterloo Minor Soccer this year, and by the looks on most of their faces I would say that they are having loads of fun. In those early days we had a six- team league. Contrast that with the 80 teams and 880 players who played in the squirt tournament on the week- end, Another 260 volunteers were involved in the tournament including coaches, assistant coaches. managers. and field convenors. The young refer- ees did a marvelous job, as did the hundreds of parents. uncles. aunts and grandparents who came out to cheer the youngsters along. Recently I was'engaged in a conversation with someone about the Euro Cup final between Greece and Portugal and a third guy joined the talk, We asked him what he thought about the Euro Cup and he said he really didn't have an optmon sinee he only watched about 30 nunutes of the whole tournament. After a few more minutes of moverqanun. It quickly became apparent that no amount of convincing would change Jus guy's mind about the menls of the "heautiful" game Too slow. loo Indirect. way too horing are the rommon refrains of people who just tlon'l like sorter l have also learned that most people who don't like the game never played it as a youngster.
