The time standards have become even tougher to meet since the first even he attended, but Martin beat even the toughest standard in the 50 m freesivle by three seconds. Martin hopes to outlast the competition at the World Masters Aud although he‘s been to a number of world events over the past decade, the adrenaline still gets pumpâ€" ing when he gets on the blocks. "Youre there with thouâ€" sands of other swimmers and you start o realize you‘re there not just tor hun, there‘s a competition that‘s taking place." said Martin. who predicts upwards of 7,000 participants at the Worlds in Italy. "You get on the starting blocks, and you wait for that gun to go off, and when you‘re in the water you‘re fully aware of the people around you. "You don‘t want to embarrass yourself, so you do the best you can." So what are some ol Martin‘s tips on being sucâ€" cessful in a World Masters‘ competition? "I ve always said that there‘s two Wiays to win i race," laughed Martin. "One is to be better than your competition, or the other one is just to outlive them. "If you don‘t have one going for you, at least you have the other one." Martin said the oldest competitor he‘s seen at the competitions is a 100â€"yearâ€" old man who swam in Monâ€" treal. HMe came in first because he was the only competitor in his category. But he swam his own race nevertheless. So how long does Martin expect to stay in the pool? With 90 year old swimtmers expected at this year‘s comâ€" petition, he said he feels spry enough to join them someday. "I do it for the fun, fit ness and fellowship." said Martin, who looks 20 years younger than his age and attributes swimming to his fitness. "It has to be fun, and obviously knowing the carâ€" dioâ€"vascular fitness part of it. But you also get to meet people from all over the world, and I‘m hoping to see a few familiar faces again this year."
