"For those of us who t just became easier to Il(lt‘lllll\ and purchase food grown in Waterloo Kegion. The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Also new to the 2004 ediâ€" tion of the map is a seasonal availability guide, which will help consumers know when different foods are available locally. About 50,000 copies of the map were printed this Spyder +1273 +239 vear, up from 40,000 in 2003. "Last year‘s maps disapâ€" peared like: hotcakes," explained Marc Xuereb. a health promotion officer with Region of Waterloo Public Health. "Our resources centre ran out of maps months ago. So we‘re printing more, knowâ€" ing what great demand there is out there for local food." The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! map is one step towards increasing the consumption of local food in Waterloo Region â€" a goal shared by its two sponsoring organizaâ€" tions, Foodlink Waterloo Region and Waterloo Region Public Health. Recent survey data revealed that residents of Waterloo Region feel it is important to buy local food, but that they face barriers to doing so. The new features on the 2004 map address some of those barriers, by giving consumers more options of how to access local food, and helping them underâ€" stand when local foods are in season. Lyle and Karen Cressman of New Hamburg renewed their listing on the map after seeing the amount of busiâ€" ness the map attracted to their farm operation last vear. "The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! map is contributing significantly to the growth of our business right now," Lyle asserted. "Consumers tell us that, while they want to buy local food, they don‘t always know which food actually is local. We‘re pleased that the map is helping identify those of us who grow and sell our own for right here in Waterloo Region." _® Fully reconditioned & guaranteed for 2 years/40k * 2 yr. unlimited mileage road assistance * 3.9% hinancing available* ‘03 Jetta Wagon TDI. aviomanc Black Â¥04086 "@2 JetQ TDI. Buy Fresh! map this year, after one year of operaâ€" tions as a project of the Cruickston _ Charitable Research Reserve in Camâ€" bridge. Its manager. Charly Mini. believes the map listing will help get the word out that it is possible to buy local food in Cambridge. Consumers can buy Cruickston‘s produce at the Cambridge Farmers® Market starting in July, or by joining their weekly food basket program, which entitles cusâ€" tomers to 16 baskets of a variety of produce over the year. Mini believes strongly in producing for the local marâ€" ket. "It‘s important to me to develop direct connections with people," Mini explained. "I don‘t want to produce for export. 1 want people to see where their food comes from, and 1 want to see peoâ€" ple enjoy the products of my labour. This is what 1 was meant to do." Copies of the map are free and available at all pubâ€" lic libraries across the region, as well as selected health food stores, nurseries, businesses, and community agencies.
