West wins second consecutive Eastâ€"West Bowl 20â€" 1 2 n a rainy Saturday Oafu't noon at Wilfrid Laurier‘s University Stadium, Simon Fraser‘s J.R. Davies led the West team to a repeat victory in the secâ€" ond annual Eastâ€"West Bow!l, throwing for two touchâ€" downs and 252 passing yards. Davies‘ passing display helped the West hold off a late surge by the East to win 20â€"12. Organized in partnerâ€" ship with the NFL and CFL, the Eastâ€"West Bow! is an allâ€" star game featuring Canadiâ€" an Interuniversity Sport (CIS} football players enterâ€" ing their professional draftâ€" year in the fall of 2004. The East team was comâ€" prised of athletes from the 14 schools located east of Toronto {including York University and University of Toronta). while the West squad was comprised of the 13 institutions west of Toronto. Despite only a week of preparation, the offensive lines of both reams were able to find their rhythm in the game, and play shifted directions repeatedly as the day wore on. Batiling through rain and cold, the best CIS playâ€" ers on both sides were able to field impressive rushes and passing, with the victoâ€" tious West team accounting for 409 yards of offence. Ihe West took what seemed like a commanding 10â€"0 lead in the rainâ€"soaked first quarter. Western Musâ€" tang kicker Rob Pikula began the scoring with a 20â€"yard field goal. Five minutes later it was Windsor Lancer Arjei Franklin who caught a 29â€" vard pass from Davies to make it 9â€"0 for the West. Pikula then completed the conversion, closing the quarter with the West in control. While the second quarâ€" ter proved uneventful, the East returned from the halfâ€" time break and made some adjustments. Momentum shifted over the first 14 minutes of the second half, and with less than a minute to go in the third quarter McMaster‘s Michael Ray put up the East‘s first three points of the game from 17 yards out. The West responded quickly to the East‘s comeâ€" back bid. Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Pikula resâ€" cued his team with a 50â€" yard kick, restoring the West‘s touchdown lead. Just over three minutes later. the East struck back, with Mick Ray delivering the fourth field goal of the game from 38 yards out. _ After a missed field goal, a strong drive, put together by St. Francis Xavier quarâ€" terback Nick Chessa, was capped off when he found Greg Hetherington of McGill University alone in the end zone.
