Members undertake a variety of fundraising events, most notably headâ€" shaving, in support of the Society‘s research and proâ€" gram initiatives. Cops for Cancer started in Alberta in 1994 when Sgt. Gary Goulet of the Edmonâ€" ton police department befriended a young boy who was suffering from cancer. Goulet‘s generous spirit inspired police officers and emergency service personâ€" nel throughout Canada to create their own fundraising and awarenessâ€"building events to support the Canaâ€" dian Cancer Society and its fight against cancer. Chemotherapy _ had caused the young boy to lose all his hair and as a result, he suffered teasing from the other kids. Goulet, who already had shaved his head, offered the boy moral support throughâ€" out his treatments. The total donation to the Canadian Cancer Society was in excess of $63,000. The police are hosting this event again this Satur day, May 8, comciding with the annual Police Week Open House, held at the Waterloo Regional Police Headquarters, 200 Maple Grove Rd. in Cambridge The Waterloo Regional Police service has hosted two Cops for Cancer head shaving events, one in 1997 and again in 2000 Anyone interested in donating or participating can contact Sgt. Bruce Tuck er for more information at 653â€"7700, ext. 788
