Designing Habitat homes gives WCI students real life experience From left â€" WCI architecture teacher Bob Clarkson, Grade 13 students Marla Paikin and Kari Rutila, and Grade 12 student Trevor Woodtke all design houses for Habitat for Humanity. 145ON MIDDLETON PHOTO By Jason Mippreton "When L came to high â€" you‘re working for a meanâ€" For The Chronicle school I basically tried to _ ingful cause. They‘ll excuse find a course that would _ you from class," said Paikin. ‘ot only does Waterloo NCollegiate Institute teacher Bob Clarkson help build the minds of stuâ€" dents. He also, with the help of his students, designs houses for this area‘s less fortunate. For five years the archiâ€" tectual design teacher and his students have worked with Habitat for Humanity, helping design 16 homes for the organization. "It gives the students real life experience. They have to meet actual time lines. We have to talk to city hall and we have to talk to the conâ€" tractor," said Clarkson. Currently students are involved in designing a fiveâ€" plex and a two storey buildâ€" ing. With a little design help from Clarkson, the students are in charge of everything including how many light switches and electrical outâ€" lets will be included, the interior design of the house and how the exterior will look. "My | parents â€" didn‘t believe me when 1 said 1 was designing houses for Habiâ€" tat. They thought 1 was just designing them and then nothing was going to be built or done with them. When they found out someâ€" one was actually receiving a house that 1 designed they were kind of stunned," said Rutila. This year WC1 students Marla Paikin, 19, Kari Rutila, 19, and Trevor Woodtke, 18. are designing the Habitat homes. Habitat came io the school five years ago asking for help in designing houses for their organization. Since then the partnership has grown. The charity organizaâ€" tion, which builds houses for lowâ€"income families, has even asked Clarkson to creâ€" ate a design catalogue of floor plans and designs for potential homeawners to choose from. When Paikin was in Grade 7 she wanted to become an interior designer "When I came to high school I basically tried to find a course that would teach me drafting skills, computer skills and the skills 1 would need for interior design," said Paikin. "If the neighbours don‘t like the house, it doesn‘t get built. It doesn‘t get built until the neighbours approve the house," said Rutila. But like normal contracâ€" tors, the students face real delemias and deadlines. Sometimes the students have to miss their other classes to finish their blueâ€" prints by deadline. "For the last two weeks 1 haven‘t gone to any of my classes because I had to get the permits in before Eastâ€" er," said Rutila 2004 Mer ades Beng Lanada Inco Torsnto: Antanic c rmited time affer 11 A C039 menth cinsed and 58 SN0 kn lease with an & 1 Ront 1 9%) 2004 C220 Spact S nupe Sedan with as MSRP of £35.790. dowo payment ~f $40487 59 and tote nfgatin® of $1.47% mol ns fuding a refundahie secunity Aeposit feight PCIL faxes cegistcation and |cence fees.
