Hrlunger said W11] has also made u deut in the housing shortagc. “danger said it's unfair ofthe city to include the On Campus model in the study. "In 1938. WE had l.lti3 beds on campus," he said. "This year we have 3,000." "Housing all of our stu- dents is fiscally absolutely impossible." he said. "It's irresponsible to have it as an option. "Why stir up people's thoughts. It's a ridiculous suggestion. and to put it into the discussion paper really bothered me." Walker said some people are losing sight of the pur- pose of the housing study. "Our understanding is that the Student Accommo- dation Study is a study to review lodging provided in the community, and to determine what the com- munity's capacity tto house students is." The other options pre- sented in the discussion paper include keeping the city's current housing poli- cies in place (Status Quo model). dispersing student across the city (Dispersed "And everyone must remember what's perfect today is not necessarily what's perfect tomorrow " - Mike Belanger WLU model). treating midi-m housing in Waterloo \ uptown and Kitchener y downtown (Uptown) l 'owtt, luwn Revitalization model), encouraging development along the city's nodes and corridors around the uni- versities and away from existing neighbourhoods (Neighbourhood Preserva- tion model). or designating an existing neighbourhood for students (Student Precinct model). Belanger said none of the options are ideal. But he said out of the choices presented, a modi- fied version of the Status Quo model is the way to go. "A great deal of time and thought went into what's in place now," he said. "Things haven't just hap- pened accidentally. "And everyone must remember what's perfect today is not necessarily what 's perfect tomorrow. .. Walker agreed the options won't fly on their own. But he said a combi- nation of the On Campus model, the Neighbourhood Preservation model and the Student Precinct model may cover a lot of bases. "The city needs a good secondary plan." he said, "one that encourages high- er density student housing. and enhances the neigh- bourhoods for existing resi- dents. "A lot of people think of this as all or nothing. and it's not." City council is expected to choose a course ofaction in June.
