So it wasnt surprising the candidates faced a slew of questions relating to student accommodations. during a town hall meeting last Wednesday at the Waterloo public library. While each candidate had a unique take on the issue, all agreed students are an asset to the community and should have adequate dwellings. Laryea suggested the city form an advisory group made up of students and neighbourhood residents to look at the issues both par- des face. "I have worked with stu- dents for a number of years and I know them to be responsible and supportive of the community." he said. "The universities have pro- vided them (students) with a lot of housing. and most of their other options for hous- ing are good. But there are some conditions that are deplorable. "We need stronger enforcement of the city's bylaws that maintains a decent quality of life for stu- dents." _ Candidate Mark Whaley said the city has good bytaws in place. But he agreed enforcement has become a problem. "I think it's good we have a moratorium in place right now until the city completes its student housing study. because the commumty doesn't know where it stands on the issue," he said.
