Sponsored by Union Gas, last Saturday‘s addition of another "instant forest" in Waterâ€" loo brings the project‘s total to nearly 2,000 new trees added to the urban canopy this year alone. Last week, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) presented its Award for Excellence in Health Promoâ€" tion to the Region of Waterâ€" loo. The first annual CMA Award for Excellence in Health Promotion is being awarded to municipalities across Canada that have passed bylaws banning smoking in all indoor public places as of July 1, 2003 _ "The Region of Waterloo has demonstrated great leadâ€" ership in the fight against Oktoberfest RLD.E. program lays 21 charges Waterloo regional police encourages drivers to canâ€" tinue to plan ahead, drive safe and drive sober after the end of their annual Oktoberfest R.1.D.E. proâ€" gram. During the 10â€"day festiâ€" val, Waterloo regional police RL.D.E. officers checked 9,644 vehicles for drinking drivers. Police conducted 88 roadside tests and issued 24 12â€"hour suspensions. Twentyâ€"one people were charged with criminal drinking and driving offences. One drug offence, one liquor charge and 25 Highâ€" way Traffic Act charges were also laid through R.L.D.E. efforts. A firstâ€"time conviction results in a 12â€"month license suspension, $600 fine and up to six months in jail. In addition, the new ignition interlock legislaâ€" tion now applies to firstâ€" time offenders.
