Driven from the planet six centuries earlier by a selfâ€"aware virus, humanity seeks to reclaim its home. . The return, however, is more complex than expectâ€" ed, as the humans find they‘ve been replaced as Earth‘s dominant species. "I can trace some of that back to a friend of mine in Alberta," Tam said of the book‘s concept. "We used to walk home together from school and we had these conversations about the meaning of life and the nature of reality. We kept coming back to this point, wondering whether animals are really inferior to humans because it just seemed odd to us that we‘d made that assumption. By the time I started writing this book, it was a storyline driven by the premise that there were these animals who have been granted the same talâ€" ents we have, but use them differently than we do, and that puts them into conflict with us. It just took on a meaning of its own eventuâ€" ally and it has generated very interesting revelations for me since then." Originally planned as a single book with three secâ€" tions, Tam found the charâ€" acters he had conjured compelling enough to folâ€" lowâ€"up "The Human Equaâ€" tion" with a second book. But even this failed to satisfy him; he finally concluded that eight books could resolve the stoâ€" ryline properly and he is currently working on volâ€" ume Six. "It does seem ambitious, I know," Tam admitted. "But by the end of the fourth one, 1 had more ideas and evenâ€" tually realized that I had to have four more books to balance the storyline. It just evolved and I‘ve been fortuâ€" nate in that I‘ve had the time to keep going on it." If Tam‘s time hasn‘t been precious enough squeezing school, work, and writing into a day, his role in estabâ€" lishing lceberg Publishing is enough to suggest that sleep may not be an option for the young man. Established in 2002 to coincide with the official release of "Standing Tall: A Daughter‘s Gift," by Kenâ€" neth‘s mother, Jacqui Tam, Iceberg is truly a family Utilizing his mother‘s skills in communications and marketing, and his father Peter‘s extensive busiâ€" ness experience, Tam hopes that Iceberg can serve as an example for struggling writâ€" ers unable to seek profesâ€" sional publishing assistance. "My mom‘s been writing a lot longer than 1 have and she finished her first nonâ€" fiction book in 1998," Tam recallled. "She began lookâ€" ing for publishers but wasn‘t finding the market very receptive. "People were saying. ‘your book is great but we don‘t have a place for it because we have other books with similar topics that we‘ve already commisâ€" sioned." "Since my mom and 1 were both writing and my dad was seriously contemâ€" plating writing, and people were liking what we were doing, we thought that we might as well utilize the skills that we‘ve got and do it ourselves because it saves a lot of legwork and provides us with creative control as well. "We just set up an onâ€" line store, which we‘re basiâ€" cally launching along with my book, so it‘s a slow evoâ€" lution but the basic premise is, we have the abilities to do it so why not; we‘ve got nothing to lose." While Tam is not about to broadcast his achieveâ€" ments around campus, word is slowly spreading about the versatile WLU stuâ€" dent whose future seems so bright. In spite of all of the vocational avenues he has already explored, Tam is adamant that no route in his life has been set in stone. "I‘ll tell you when 1 get there," he laughed about where he expects to be in the future. "I have options in the academic world, perâ€" haps in the publishing world, but basically I‘ve learned that planning too far ahead of time is inevitably a bad idea because things will change. So, I‘ve kept my options open and I‘m not too set in any one path. "I‘m confident that things will work out in one direction or another and that I‘ll end up quite happy where I am." "The Human Equation" launch will be held in the St. David Catholic school library from 7â€"9:30 p.m.. Oct. 9. For more information., call 572â€"1479, or visit www.icebergpublishing com.
