N2L 2R5 "We had been doing some small student films and came to the conclusion that, after you‘d finished the film, there wasn‘t anywhere to promote it," he said, explaining how Aspirations came about. "There were small festivals at each uniâ€" versity or a large festival might have one category for student films but there realâ€" ly wasn‘t a film festival that showcased only student films. So, we came up with the idea of starting a Kâ€"W film festival, which eventuâ€" ally grew into a full, Canadiâ€" an student film festival." Last year‘s event, held at the Princess Cinema, was a great success and resulted in the festival expanding its parameters this year. To to have initiated the first edition of the festival last year after dabbling in film during university. miss this! accomodate the screening of 45 juryâ€"picked films, the festival has gone from a three to four day event, opening with a fully catered gala on September 25 feaâ€" turing a speaking engageâ€" ment by former Kâ€"W resiâ€" dent Timothy Eaton, now one of Hollywood‘s most accomplished and soughtâ€" after visual effects wizards. Eaton‘s credits include Oscarâ€"winning turns in Forâ€" rest Gump, Titanic, and Jurassic Park and he is curâ€" rently working on the highly anticipated adaptation of The Polar Express starring Tom Hanks. His flying in from Los Angeles is a great coup for Aspirations‘ orgaâ€" nizers and his background as a WLU student and resiâ€" dent in this area might be one indication as to why the largest Canadian film festiâ€" val of its kind has been able to find its footing in our modest little city of Waterâ€" loo. "We get pretty much all the top student‘s films for our festival," Henderson stated. "If we‘re getting the top of the class now, then in 10 vears these are going to be the top filmmakers in Canada and we‘re giving people a glimpse of that. So, you see a lot of patterns in In addition to offering patrons an opportunity to see some of tomorrow‘s filmmaking stars today. Aspirations provides a forum for audiences to experience the latest tech nological advances in film making in their infancy "It‘s a city known for its arts community," Henderâ€" son explained. "There‘s defiâ€" nitely a serious love of film hereâ€"where else could a place like the Princess or Gen X thrive in a communiâ€" ty of 100,000 people? Those are both very fringé operaâ€" tions but they both do very well because people are into trying new things here. The other thing is that this is the student capital of Canada; the percentage of students here is overwhelming so it makes a lot of sense to have a student film festival here." Continued on page 13
