Continued from page 6 Sean Strickland, a Waterloo regional councilior., runâ€" ning for the Liberals. â€" He said this election will come down to a choice of more of the same including tax cuts and the correâ€" sponding decrease in serâ€" vice, or endorsing the change the Liberals are offering which includes a restoration of critical serâ€" vices including health and education. Provincial candidates hit the campaign trail "This government is going to try all sort of gimâ€" micks, tricks and policies to try to get (province) to vote Conservative and put their own private interests ahead of the public interâ€" est," said Strickland. Strickland said that eduâ€" cation tax credits for seniors is poor public poliâ€" cy because, by extension, younger families may then want tax credits for health care services that they don‘t use as often. "Would they prefer a couple of dollars a week tax credit or would they prefer a nurse to come in one more time a week to provide them with the care they need to stay in their home," said Strickland. "We‘ll reinvest in home care so that seniors can stay in their home as long as they possibly can." The â€" Liberals _ also promise to improve fundâ€" ing to health care and eduâ€" cation in general, so that the new regional cancer centre has the $8 million it needs to operate its serâ€" vices, said Strickland. They would also look to freeze tuition rates for local uniâ€" versity and college stuâ€" dents. And they promise to do so while continuing to balâ€" ance the province‘s books, and cancelling things like the slated corporate tax cut, and a tax cut to parâ€" ents with students in priâ€" vate schools. "People are going to have to make a choice," said Strickland. "They‘re going to have to make a choice for change. "The Liberals have a plan to take hardâ€"earned taxpayers‘ dollars and reinâ€" vest them into public serâ€" vices that we can rely on. We need to be able to trust our water system... you can‘t continue to manage the province of Ontario simply on the basis of tax cuts. We need to appeal to the better instincts of the members of our communiâ€" Dan Lajoie, a longâ€"time local activist for disability issues, is representing the NDP in the Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo ward as part of the party‘s Public Power campaign. The NDP is also looking to reinvest in eduâ€" cation and health while reasserting control of pubâ€" lic institutions like elecâ€" tricity in Ontario. They think they have a real issue with the rising cost of auto insurance, and are promising a public sysâ€" tem that will give drivers a break. "We‘re looking at the whole broader concept of privatization and cutting corners," said Lajoie. "The result of all those tax breaks has been a failing system which we‘ve seen dramatically in Aylmer (tainted meat), Walkerton and in Hydro. Lajoie said the NDP will also look at matters that have lagged under the Tories including the miniâ€" "We‘re not interested in new taxes, we just want to retain the services the province has and strengthâ€" en them. The Tories have created a crisis in almost everything they‘ve touched. When it comes to the essentials, it‘s imporâ€" tant that those services receive the proper fundâ€" ing." Local environmental activist Pauline Richards said Vista Hills and the potential sale of Laurel Creek Conservation lands is a product of provincial policy. Even transportation can be viewed as a health issue, with more public transit contributing to better local air quality. "Everything is connected," said Richards, about the party‘s more holistic approach to issues which promotes sustainâ€" ability around the environâ€" ment. "That‘s all tied into health including the preâ€" ventative aspects of air quality and pollution," said Richards.
