UW launches Waterloo Institute for Health Informatics Research (WIHIR) The new institute is a transâ€"disciplinary research collaborative aimed at the advancement of health through the discovery and development of new Health Informatics concepts and tools. The WIHIR is the first universityâ€"approved instiâ€" tute dedicated to Health Informatics research in Canada, and one of few in North America. WIHIR brings together Accelerating the future faculty from the applied health sciences, computing, basic sciences, mathematâ€" ics, arts, engineering and environmental studies to work together on addressâ€" ing major informationâ€" related challenges to an efficient, effective and susâ€" tainable health system. WIHIR works with health organizations, â€" private industry, government and experts at other academic centres on major Health Informatics research projâ€" ects. Health Informatics is the discipline that investigates how information, informaâ€" tion management, and information and communiâ€" cations technology can supâ€" port and advance health and the health system. WIHIR research focuses on the areas of Health Information Management, the People and Organizaâ€" tional Aspects of Informatâ€" ics Interventions in Health, Health Informatics Techâ€" nologies and Biomedical Systems Informatics. Examples of projects already underway include studies of the economics of information technology in the health system and research on techniques of ubiquitous computing applied to population interâ€" ventional health. "This institute positions the University of Waterloo to make its next major conâ€" tribution to the future of the health system," said Prof. Paul Guild, viceâ€"presiâ€" dent of university research at UW, "It aligns our signifiâ€" cant research capabilities to address the challenge of taking full advantage of information and communiâ€" cations technologies in proâ€" moting and maintaining a healthy population." About 50 faculty memâ€" bers from 15 departments and schools in all six faculâ€" ties at UW make up the research team. WIHIR aspires to achieve a number of goals, such as providing national leaderâ€" ship in Health Informatics research, delivering demonstrable value to the health system in terms of informatics _ solutions, building evidence of the business value of informatâ€" ics solutions in health, influencing national inforâ€" matics policy and producâ€" 2002 GMC YUKON SLT * wuxes, leance and admin. fee axire 7 passengers, moonroot, tan 2002 GMC ENVOY XL 7 passengers, 4X4, white 2000 GMC JIMMY Ax4, 2 door with moonroof WATERLOG CHRONICLE VOLUNTARY PAY-Don'nusroorr. "Our belief in the value of the institute is based on the excellence of our researchers and their track records," said Prof. Dominic Covvey, founding director of WIHIR. "What the institute does is to ‘braid‘ these performâ€" ers together and bind them through exchange, collaboâ€" ration â€" and â€" collective research projects in areas that are natural extensions of their strengths. This is a whole that is composed of already capable researchers plus capabilities that are products of their interacâ€" tion." The institute‘s orientaâ€" tion to research in the basic disciplines is unique. That‘s because its research places special emphasis on the fact that informatics systems exist in and depend on the human context. Through the involveâ€" ment and leadership of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, WIHIR addresses the broad area of health, not just the acute health system. _ > This strength in populaâ€" tion health, public health and health promotion puts WIHIR in the position of bringing Health Informatics into areas that have great societal impacts but that have received relatively litâ€" tle attention to date. + For more information on WIHIR, visit http://hi.uwaâ€" terloo.ca or call Shirley Fenâ€" ton, managing director of WIHIR, at 888â€"4074. +44,995 +39,995 $‘14,995
