Cheryl Thiessen of the Black Cats pitched to Ron Sutherland of Rough in the Diamond during NCR‘s annual sloâ€"pitch tournament in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, held Saturday and Sunday at Hillside Park in Waterloo. Now in its 16th year, the event is the second largest fundraiser for JDRF‘s Wateriloo Chapter. The tournament is an NCR employeeâ€" led, employeeâ€"run initiative that relies on support from volunteers and the community. Up for grabs this year were a host of raffie prizes that participants, sloâ€"pitch enthusiasts and spectaâ€" tors won, including a hot air balloon ride; accommodation and theatre tickets from the Best Western and St. Jacobs Country Inn; a lawn swing; a power washer; a spa escape; a Sony DVD player; and Blue Jays tickets. Also up for grabs were a wide range of gift certificates for everyâ€" thing from Bingemans, Paramount Canada‘s Wonderland, and Marineland, to a diving lesson from Groundhog Divers, and restaurants such as the Mongolian Grill and East Side Marios. The event also featured a food and beer garden, homeâ€"run hitting contests, and music and more. It is estimated that approximately half a million North Americans die as a result of diaâ€" betes and its complications. The JDRF Canada was founded in 1974 and over the years has contributed more than $615 million to research projects throughout the world.
