Walking a mile in Elvis‘ shoes Ivis Presleyâ€"died Aug. Elli. 1977. We rememâ€" ber the day. We heard it on the radio as we were driving down the west coast to San Francisco. In 1995, we visited Graceâ€" land, Elvis‘® mansion in Memphis, Tenn. Until then, our impressions of Graceâ€" land were women swarming the grounds on a daily basis, making fools of themselves. The Lisa Marie was something else again. The plane that Elvis named after his daughter displayed the luxury of its time, sky phones, three televisions, quadraphonic stereo system and goldâ€"plated seat belt buckles. There was even a queenâ€"size bed with a large seat belt. A galley with stove, refrigerator and builtâ€"in cofâ€" fee maker. Restrooms with two brass fixtures imported from Spain and 24K gold flecks in the sinks. The airâ€" Inside we felt that we had entered Elvis® personal life. In the dining room as we stood at the rope barrier behind Elvis‘ chair, we saw the room from his perspecâ€" tive, warm, bright and open. We would have felt comfortâ€" able sitting at his table. Garish furniture. Black velâ€" vet paintings. Pink Cadillac. Gaudy wrought iron gates. We discovered that we were wrong. Graceland was Elvis‘ home. It sits at the top of a hill, tall and white with its pillars and windows, looking down the curved driveway across the lawns through the oak trees to the street. The day we were there, the barely noticeable wrought iron gates were open, plane required a crew of four. On a video, one of the pilots told the story of Elvis taking a group of his friends on a late night flight to Denâ€" ver, Colo., because Elvis knew a place there with the best peanut butter sandâ€" wiches. Taste the soup and add salt and pepper if required. Whisk the ingrediâ€" ents until they are well mixed. Return the soup to the refrigerator to chill the cream. Ladle the chilled sweet potato soup into serving bowls and trickle a thin line of whipping cream on top as garnish. This is a thick soup but if it needs a little thinâ€" ning add more cream or water or both. Peel and dice the sweet potato. Dice the onion. Combine the sweet potato, onion, and chicken broth in a saucepan. Cook on mediâ€" um heat until the onion and sweet potato are tender.
