Quilting Party PETER ETRIL SNYDER Quilting is one of the few art forms practised among the strictly conservative Mennonite and Amish groups. The practical side of this art allows it to flourish in societies that eschew friâ€" volity and fun. It would be unthinkable for a young Mennonite woman to be married without having sevâ€" eral quilts in her hope chest. In addition to artistic aspects and the thermal consideration, quilting allows for visiting and chatâ€" ting. One of the main Menâ€" nonite ideals is the encourâ€" agement of community. Quilting is an ideal way for female members of the famâ€" ily to come together for an approved activity. _ People outside of Menâ€" nonite circles are flocking to Submissions sought for Aspirations film festival experiment with and experiâ€" ence the joy of the quiltâ€" maker‘s art. The regional Quilt Festival that starts tomorrow will draw huge crowds to the area where quilters‘ guilds will display intriguing examples of new and exotic quilts unknown to the traditionalists. The imagination and courage that these craftspeople disâ€" play produce a spectrum of work from painterlyâ€"like examples to abstract designs. Over the last number of years, my wife, Marilyn, who studied textiles at the Aspirations, Canada‘s national student film festiâ€" val, is accepting submisâ€" sions for its 2003 film festiâ€" val to be held Sept. 25â€"28 at the Princess Cinema in Waterloo.
