Local residents join World Partnership Walk in fight against global poverty tchener will join B forces with nine other ities across Canada May 25 at 11 a.m. in the World Partnership Walk to raise money and awareness to fight world poverty and help relieve global tensions. The walk, now in its 19th year, is the country‘s largest annual event of its kind in support of international cooperation. Organized by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada, a nonâ€"profit development agency that supports social development in the poorest countries of the developing world, the walk brings together Canadians from all walks of life to raise funds for and learn about projects that help individuals and communities in Asia and Africa rise from poverty. All of the money raised in the walk goes to overseas projects. And the proceeds are matched by the Canadiâ€" an government through the Canadian International Development Agency, mulâ€" tiplying their effect. The walk is expected to involve more than 60,000 people as sponsors and walkers in 10 cities: Kitchâ€" ener, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vanâ€" couver and Victoria. As well, some 1,000 volunteers and 800 â€" corporations . are involved. Since its inception, the walk has raised more than $20 million; last year $2.75 million was collected to enhance the quality of eduâ€" cation, improve healthcare, increase rural incomes and build the capacity of comâ€" munity organizations in the developing world. Now, more than ever, is the time for the people of Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo to be involved in this topâ€"ofâ€"mind issue.
