You are, for sure, going to be doing scales for about a year. Maybe two years. You can practise with Harry Manx‘ purr is unique and beautiful it, but on occasions when there are people gathered, the playing is usually done by those that really can play. They sort of frown on peoâ€" ple trying to get into it too "Bhatt kept me in pracâ€" tice and eventually 1 could play enough of a raga of funk, groove and "Jazz for today." Modern jazzâ€"funk greats {such as Soulive, John Scofield and Medeski, Marâ€" tin and Wood) make up the core influences of the Filet. On the stage, it‘s the master‘s realm there, and he plays and you find yourself just naturally being very respectâ€" ful. I was very thankful just to play the tambura and lisâ€" ten to him." Manx took that Indian discipline and applied it to his own instrumental But with backgrounds in funk, blues, alternative rock, and all sorts of jazz styles, Filet‘s members bring a new blend of sounds to the plate â€" not to mention a handful of original tunes. finesse from Hawaiian lapâ€" string guitar to his sitarâ€"like mohan veena (a gift from Bhatt). The mohan veena sparkles through many of the Wise and Otherwise tracks, from childhood tribâ€" utes of Hendrix‘ Foxy Lady and Van Morrison‘s Crazy Love to the haunting beauty of Raga Nat Bhariav. Other highlights include B.B King‘s The Thrill is Gone, The Gift of Madhuvanti, Tethered Dogs, and Coat of Mail, the poignant tale of Manx‘ old friend â€" a downâ€"andâ€"out artist turned panhandler. Makes You Wanna Die Laughing rings of Sept. 11, sadly ironic, as he was then recording this current CD. Manx has a solid perception of the world, and though 9/11 shook him, he continâ€" ues to instil hope in his music â€" the Manx mix of harmonica, slide guitar, and mohan veena is not darkâ€" but opaque. "It sort of fell into place by accident. Being a blues player and then studying Indian music, I started to do this more or less in jest, mix ing the two. But then I noticed that people‘s ears really picked up on it when they heard it. I am surprised that people have taken to that sound so much. 1 bend the rules in blues and Indian music, more than others, I guess. Manx‘ exploration has earned him much respect from his musical comrades and critics alike, who lave that unusual Indianâ€"accentâ€" Deltaâ€"blues sound. His first CD Dog My Cat won Best Album of the Year at the 2002 Canadian Indeâ€" pendent Music Awards. Manx, now 47, has come back to Canada 20 years on. He and Brazilian wife Najma Romeiro (she did the CD jacket photos, and this CD was dedicated to her late father Oswaldo) have a house on Saltpsring Island, B.C. This plush island of artists is the perfect place to create. Wise and Otherwise, recorded at Barn Studio (good friend Randy Bachâ€" man‘s studio on Saltspring Island) is also receiving the same acclaim. "Beside my house on Saltspring, I have a little piece of land with a cabin on it, and that‘s my sort of sacred place. I go there and I write the words separately from the music. I write and reâ€"write and I try to say things. Working with words is a challenge, something that you never arrive at completely, but the journey is quite something." This keeps Harry Manx happy.
