"They‘re going to change the system to make it more efficient and bring groups of doctors together with nursâ€" es," he said. "It‘ll make things more efficient, but I don‘t know about better." "It was always something different," he said. "There were no two patients who were the same. "Everyone is interesting in their own way. That‘s what kept me in medicine, finding a way to relieve them." One thing that should help attract doctors to the area is the addition of advanced cancer care and cardiac care with the new centres at Grand River Hosâ€" pital and St. Mary‘s Hospital. "That will put us on the map," said McMurchy. Just keeping up with the number of retiring doctors has dominated the work of the Chamber of Commerce‘s Physician Recruitment Task Force in the past year. The head of that task force, Gien Mathers, said it‘s going to be a tough job to keep up with all the doctors who can potentially retire over the next few years. "The number of people who need a family doctor has remained static in the last year," said Mathers. "We‘ve had people retire but we‘ve had people come to keep pace with those retireâ€" ments. "In the first few years we were able to autpace the attrition rate, but last year the attrition rate went up. it‘s an ongoing thing because in the next couple of years there will be a lot more doctors retiring." The task force is continuâ€" ing its work to bring new doctors to the area, and will be touring each of the province‘s five medical teaching centres later this week with the help of the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario. The taskforce also has a physician _ recruitment weekend set up for Novemâ€" ber, hoping to attract more doctors to the area by showâ€" ing what the Waterloo region has to offer. "We‘ve dane our best to stay a cut above all our comâ€" petitors," said Mathers about a competition that sees more than 90 Ontario communities _ declared underserviced "If we remained static. and didn‘t continue to recruit, we‘d lose our edge."
