Last year the spirit of the annual fundraising drive was dampened by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States â€" the same day the campaign kicked off. And though the camâ€" paign goal of $5.06 million was surpassed, with $5.07 million coming in, organizâ€" ers called it one of the tightâ€" est drives on record. But this year nothing could rain on the parade, as campaign officials annâ€" ounced last Wednesday their goal of raising $5.12 million for the United Way‘s member agencies and proâ€" grams. "People‘s minds were on different things last year," said Karen Valeriote, the 2002 campaign chair. "But I would say we have a fair goal this year. It‘s maybe even a little conserâ€" vative. "Given the enthusiasm I‘ve seen already in the difâ€" ferent workplaces, I just have this feeling we‘ll surâ€" pass it." And if this year‘s pacesetâ€" ter campaign is any indicaâ€" tion, Valeriote just may be right. Prior to the kickoff, a lot of local companies, organiâ€" zations and individuals either pledged or made donations to the campaign of over $1.1 million. That accounts for 22 per cent of the United Way‘s overall goal. "That‘s just great news," Valeriote said. "We‘re already almost a quarter of the way there. "The theme for this year‘s campaign is ‘United We Care." How fitting is that for a community such as ours. Whether you are a donor, a volunteer or a recipient of services, you are part of a community that is stronger because we all care." The campaign chair reminded there are many ways groups can contribute to the campaign. Some companies, like Manulife Financial, hold scavenger hunts, while othâ€" ers, like Clarica, hold games for employees. "We‘ve seen some pretty great ideas," Valeriote said. The campaign will wrap up Nov. 8, with the touchâ€" down event to follow Nov. 22, where organizers will announce _ this year‘s achievement. "I‘m really thrilled to be speaking for the volunteers and the work they‘re doing," Valeriote said. "That‘s how 1 see my role. "It‘s a great cause, and I‘m thrilled to be here."
