Bridge Street traffic signal gets green light Waterloo council voted unanimously in favour of installing traffic control sigâ€" nals at the intersection of Bridge Street and Chesaâ€" peake Drive Monday night, at a cost of $80,000. The group also voted to move the adult crossing guard now located on Bridge Street at the walkway to Wissler Road to the same intersection until the end of the fiscal year. The decision responded to concerns raised by resiâ€" dents in the area, whose Studenl safety was put first Monday night when Waterloo council approved the installation of traffic sigâ€" nals at a busy section of Bridgeport Road. Council approves traffic lights at busy intersection Council authorized the implementation of pedestriâ€" an signal lights at Bridgeâ€" port Road and Peppler Street by August 2002, at a cost of $40,000. They also voted to have city staff implement an adult crossing guard at the intersection of Bridgeport Road and Peppler Street in conjunction with the signal lights during the morning and afternoon school times for a oneâ€"year trial period, at an estimated cost of $3,500. The measures will help ensure a safe walk to school for Brighton public school students who will transfer to Elizabeth Ziegler public school in September. But he began to lose hope when his arguments were rejected by both the Waterloo Region District school board and Waterloo regional council. He said the school board turned down his request to help fund the traffic signals, after he pointed the board will save money not having to bus students. He received a similar response from regional council, who turned down his request after agreeing the proposal failed to meet two of the three traffic warâ€" they have been accepted by the Brighton public school‘s parent council. â€" "Although we are disapâ€" pointed that a school bus will not be transporting our children to Elizabeth Ziegler public school, we are strongly supportive of havâ€" ing pedestrian signal lights and a crossing guard at the Bridgeport Road/Pepper Street intersection," said Mary Anne Haney of the Brighton public school ehlueter 2002 CHEVY TRACKER 4x4 Chevrolet Oldsmobile Motors NOC of $3,700 applied. Regional traffic officials claimed the intersection doesn‘t have a history of accidents and fails to meet the required traffic volumes. But he argued schoolâ€" aged children, sometimes as young as four, don‘t have the same judgment as adults when crossing a busy road. "Children under 10 can‘t judge the speed of (approaching) vehicles, and they are easily distracted," Gebotys said. "Please. Lights and a guard are crucial for safety, more so given the age of the children." City council proved to be more sympathetic transportation committee, in a letter to the city.
