North â€" America‘s â€" first Black History Month was celebrated in 1960, when segregation was still a social, legal and economic fact of life, when public denigration of people with African roots and dark skin was accepted as normal. It took another 35 years, until 1995, for Canada‘s fedâ€" eral government to formally recognize Black Heritage Month as an integral part of our cultural mosaic. Barely a year after that, a small _ group _ of _ local Caribbean and Guyanan families gathered in a rented room to build a Christian congregation â€" where no one, regardless of colour, background, status, gender, wealth, ability, age, or any â€" other "difference," would ever again feel left out as they worshipped God. Sunday‘s packed congreâ€" a gation in a secondâ€"floor forâ€" *.; mer office suite at Victoria reex Hills Plaza, where many of Rev. As Maranatha‘s youth led congregational prayers for peace, understanding, forâ€" giveness, and reconciliation, multicoloured tapers were lit for each petition. Whether yellow, green, blue, lilac, red, indigo _ or white, Rev. Habibullah challenged lisâ€" teners to remember that each candle burned with the same colour of flame, "a common light of love." Briefly recalling his own journey, from childhood on a Caribbean sugar plantaâ€" tion, to a teaching career in England, to answering the call of Lutheran ministry in Canada, Habibullah warned that Christians cannot pasâ€" sively ignore or hide from racism. Calling it "the infection of an unclean spirit in the world," he urged all people of faith to confront racism by trusting in God‘s word and speaking God‘s truth in love and forgiveness. "It may not come to you in long white robes with pointed hoods," he said, referring to the stereotypical Ku Klux Klan garb of the 1950s and 1960s. "Instead, it may come to you in a pinâ€" striped â€" suit and polite words." By following Jesus‘ active example, he concluded, people of every colour can live together in renewed hope, "rejoicing in the wealth and beauty of your heritage."
