Kâ€"W Chamber Orchestra presents Beautifully Baroque The 17th â€" season _ of the Kitchenerâ€"Waterloo Chamber Orchestra continâ€" ues with â€" its Beautifully Baroque concert, Feb. 9 at 8:30 p.m. at Wilfrid Laurier University‘s Maureen Forrâ€" ester Hall Soloist will be principal bassoonist of the Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo Symphony Cedric Coleman, who was to have appeared with KWCO last season, but had to withdraw because of an injury. So a concert of baroque music has been fashioned around his performance of Vivaldi‘s Bassoon Concerto in A minor. The orchestra will show how great a variety of music can be found in the baroque. Two composers from last year‘s baroque concert are again featured this season. George Philipp Telemann is represented by the suite from Tafelmusk I, which is for two futes and strings. tOCU The concerto by Jan Dismas Zelenka that was played last year caused such favourable comment that KWCO has included this time his Suite in F, which also contains the bold harmonic shifts and deft countrapuntal touches that he is known for. The top French instruâ€" mental composer of his time, Francois Couperin, is represented by his 10th conâ€" certo, parts of Les Gouts Reunis. From the Italian side of the baroque the concert has a Concerto Grosso by the violin virtuoso Pietro Locatelli and the sinfonia from the oratorio The Death of Abel of Antonio Caldara. The continuo will be perâ€" formed again this year by Jan Overduin, and the orchestra is directed by Graham Coles. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and are available in advance at Twelfth Night Music Shoppe or at the door on the evening of the concert. Box office opens at 7:15 p.m. Children 10 years and younger are admitted free. The City of Waterloo‘s youth recreation council is back in business after a wonderful Christmas break. All committees are starting up on their second projects, but before that, the entire council needs to be congratâ€" ulated on its awesome Christmas events. First off, the Christmas charity dance, run by the community services comâ€" mittee was a great success. It had a great turnout of about 78 youth, (despite the snow) and ended up raising $475. All the proceeds went to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region and to support our Family Hamper. The sports and _ trails â€"committee‘s wheelchair hockey fundâ€" raiser turned out to be a fierce game, but lots of fun. All $350 raised for this event went to Kâ€"W Accessâ€"Ability. The arts, music and culture committee, held its Christmas coffee house, and raised $120. Thanks to The Gnus, an awesome _ local _ band (the_gnus@hptmail.com), for providing us with great music and entertainment, plus selling their CDs and donating 100 per cent of the proceeds to the food bank. A special thanks goes out to all who donated door prizes for all of our _ Christmas _ events: Dominoes Pizza, Hallmark, Conestoga Mall, KFC, The Gnus, HMV, University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. Thanks to all who came out to our events and all who put in their time and effort. Good luck on your exams, and stay tuned for up and coming Waterloo youth recreational council events. Becky Miller is a member of the City of Waterloo youth recreation council.
