Student arrested after bomb threat made at Sir Edgar Bauer school taff and students were evacuated from Sir Edgar uer school last Thursday when a bomb threat was called into the Waterloo Catholic elementary school. The call was quickly deterâ€" mined to be a prank after police arrived at the school, and a 13â€"yearâ€"old boy was charged with mischief and uttering a threat. School officials said the stuâ€" dent is now suspended under provisions of the province‘s new Safe Schools Act and its code of conduct. The youth, who cannot be identified under the Young Offenders Act, faces a suspenâ€" sion of up to 20 days. Sir Edgar Bauer principal Pam Garbutt, said she received a call at 11:43 a.m. saying there was a bomb in the school. The call came in right at lunchtime as students were being disâ€" missed for their noonâ€"time "The caller said that theres a bomb in the school and it will go off at 3 p.m.," said Garbutt. "So we followed our school board‘s procedures for such a Interest high in Rink Continued from page 1 that we were asking for, so we probably need to get more information," said Friedel. Both local universities were also contacted by the city to gauge their interest in the site, but Friedel wouldn‘t say ifeither one was interested in the faciliâ€" public who those people were that submitted expressfons of interest," said Friedel, "We‘re going to leave that to the report to council so that everybody can get the same information." One of the groups that has expressed interest is a hockey development group that curâ€" rently runs most of its training programs out of rented faciliâ€" ties at the Columbia Icefields, on the campus of the University of WaterlOo. Brill, the current general manager of the Cambridge Winter Hawks, said his group is looking at expanding its proâ€" gramming, and feels that Rink in the Park would be an ideal spot to establish a developâ€" mental rink "It will be maintained as a public facility with a view to developing _ hockey _ skills regardless of age or gender," he Brill and his group think not enough time is spent of skills development at the local level because of the lack of ice time available. They hope their centre would change that. "With all respect to the assoâ€" ciations, they just don‘t have the ice time to provide the skills training for these young kids "We proceeded to evacuate, "We‘re not going to make By Bos VrBanac â€" Chronicle Staff and staff were designated to security duties." e A 911 call was made to local police, _ who _ responded promptly to search through the school. During their investigaâ€" tion, a tip came in that fingered one of the school‘s senior stuâ€" dents for making the fake "The person receiving the call quickly realized that it was a fairly young person disguising his voice," said Staff Sgt. Dan Anderson of the Waterloo regional police. "We went through _ the _ appropriate actions with the school, but it became apparent that it was a student that made the call. "We got some very quick cooperation from some of the other students about who had done this, and an arrest was While charges of mischief and making a threat are pendâ€" "The message we want to get out there is that we are safe, and there is no problem." coming up," said Brill. "We get 15 and 16â€"yearâ€"olds coming into our program that don‘t know what to do away from the puck, and a lot of times don‘t even know what to do with the A Waterloo training centre could also become a centre of excellence as seen in other sports like track and swimâ€" ming, he said. "I think it would be someâ€" thing picked up by other comâ€" munities," said the Waterloo native, who has been involved in hockey evaluation and development for most of his 58 years. "We‘re currently designâ€" ing a program that will fit into that model, keeping in mind that we want to put the fun back into hockey." Brill said that the game has become too resultsâ€"oriented, forgetting to foster the love of the game that has fueled him throughout his life. "This would fit perfectly with kids coming up through the program," said Brill. "I‘m an advocate of starting kids in leagues when they‘re older, and support the Open Ice Summit‘s emphasis on more practice Friedel said staff will seek some immediate direction from council on which direcâ€" tion to pursue with the site. The goal is to get the facility back up and running as soon as possiâ€" ble. "The shorter the time frame the better for everybody involved," he said. "We‘re not â€" Pam Garbutt Sir Edgar Baner principal at ing against the young offender, the school is still deciding what actions to take against the stuâ€" dent. "It falls under the Safe and Secure School Act, but we‘re still at this time determining what exactly the response of the school is," said Garbutt. "At this point it‘s a lengthy suspenâ€" sion from the school." Garbutt was happy how her staff and students responded to the "prank" in light of recent events, and some of the obviâ€" ous concems that have been raised since the Sept. 11 terrorâ€" ist attacks in the U.S. "When we brought them in we brought them all into an assembly and a Waterloo police sergeant spoke about what happened," said Garbutt, who also sent a letter home with the students for concerned parâ€" ents. "The message we want to get out there is that we are safe, and there is no problem. "Everyone was exemplary in the way they acted. I can‘t say enough about how excellent the staff and students were in response to this whole thing, It responsible behaviour. "It was a prank and we have to emphasize that.
