Midnight Sun heads down under he _ University _ of I Waterloo‘s Midnight Sun VI solar car is tuning up for its next race in Australia with a brand new solar cell array, thanks to a corporate sponsor. The student race car team recently purchased at a discount 3,200 Gallium Arsenide solar cells from EMCORE Corporation. The cells are manufacâ€" tured for space flight appliâ€" cations, therefore producâ€" ing a much higher level of power than the existing terrestrial array by the team. "These _ cells _ were offered at a greatly reduced price to the solar car team," said Greg Thompson; proâ€" ject manager, adding that a commercial customer of EMCORE _ would _ pay approximately $750,000 for similar cells. EMCORE is a leading provider of compound semiconductor technoloâ€" gies for global communicaâ€" Nike ad an inspiration Continued from page 11 said. "It feels like you have a large toque on. It‘s so itchy and hot "You can‘t do anything comfortably with it on. When you‘re in a restaurant trying to eat, you can feel it move back and forth whenever your jaw moves. And then you wonder who can tell. "Even waiting in line to see a movie, you‘re always wondering _ if _ anyone‘s noticed it‘s a wig. It could be very uncomfortable." Derhak said she ultimateâ€" ly passed on the wig, and instead opted to wear a kerâ€" chief. "At that point 1 figured that 1 was going through a lot, and 1 didn‘t care what people thought," she said. _ But during even her most darkest hours, Derhak never had thoughts of giving up. "The fear that comes over you during an experience like this is debilitating," she said. "But I wouldn‘t let it take over. If I had, the cancer would have won. "Even now it tries to creep back in. But at those times I have to focus and live in the moment." Derhak said her inspiraâ€" tion to fight came with the birth of her grandson during her chemotherapy treatâ€" ments. I kept telling myself that I had to get better because I‘ve got grandkids to live for," Derhak said. "There was never a time I wanted to give up, no way." Amazed by the sheer determination shown, Derhak‘s fitness instructor at a local gym told her about the Nike campaign, and encouraged her to write about her experience. "At first T didn‘t think 1 tions. Compound semiâ€" conductors have replaced applications using siliconâ€" based devices, because of their innovative properties that enable electrons to move more than four times faster than through siliconâ€" based devices. The race car is propelled by electricity generated by sunlight, using solar or photovoltaic cells to conâ€" vert sunlight into electriciâ€" ty. Aerodynamically designed, the oneâ€"person vehicle resembles a spaceâ€" ship rather than convenâ€" tional passenger vehicles. The car is low, sleek and colorful, with solar cells covering much of the body. Thompson _ explained that the new cells are tripleâ€"junction cells which offer the advantage of being able to capture and convert not only the visible light spectrum, but also portions of the IR {Infraâ€" Red) and UV (ultraviolet light) spectrums. could do it," she said. "But then one night I just sat down and wrote it. "I got a call from the advertising agency in July, and they said they wanted to use my story in honour of breast cancer month." Derthak hopes that by sharing her story, she has motivated at least one woman to go for regular mammograms, and mainâ€" The new cells will be shipped to SunCat Solar in Phoenix Ariz., where the company _ will â€" prepare (encapsulate) the cells for placement on the solar car later in October. The increased power level from the array will go directly to an increase in vehicle speed that will enhance competitiveness of UW‘s solar car in Australia. Along with entries from Queen‘s University and the University of Toronto, the UW car will participate in the World Solar Chalienge from Nov. 18â€"28 in the land down under. A biennial solarâ€"vehicle race that began in 1987, it requires each solar vehicle team to cross from Darwin, on the northern tip of Australia, _ to â€" Adelaide, located at the southern end of the country. 1t cuts across the great continent of Australia and more than 3,000 kilometres of desert. "I really believe fitness is the key to life," she said. "I‘ve always been into fitness, and the fact that I had a strong body through all of this, I think, saved me. tain a healthy fitness routine. "If I had not been as fit as I was, I could not have gone through this. _ _ "Now I know that if it hapâ€" pens again, I can deal with k.” Last summer, UW‘s solar car team placed third in a field of 28 and top standing for a Canadian university at the 11â€"day American Solar Challenge, the longest solar car race in the world. The UW car traveled 3,703 km from Chicago to the finish in Claremont, Calf. It made the trip in 62 hours and 18 seconds. The Midnight Sun VI team is the largest studentâ€" run project at UW, with more than 100 students contributing their skills and talents. This year, the solar car was a completely reâ€"engiâ€" neered design, with improvements in aerodyâ€" namics and electrical and mechanical systems For more information, contact: Greg Thompson, project manager, at 886â€" 4567 , ext 2978; g2thomps@midnightsun.u waterlo0.ca.
