ANDREW‘S MEMORIAL <, ANGLICAN CHURCH "Friends, Faith and Fellowship" WATERLOO MB CHURCH 245 Lexington Rd. 8§5â€"5330 SUNDAY SERVICES 575 Mill Street, Kitchener Local teen flying high with Air Cadets or 18â€"yearâ€"old air cadet FUaniel Lau, it‘s a dream come true. This summer the Waterloo resiâ€" dent became a fully qualiâ€" fied air pilot, wearing the coveted wings of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. her Lau has been a member of Waterloo‘s No. 530 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadâ€" ron for three years. He has risen to the rank of Flight Sergeant, a testament to his dedication to the air cadet program and leadership potential. Cadet flight Sergeant Daniel Lau conducts a "walkâ€"around" inspection of his aircraft. In that time Lau has masâ€" tered theory of flight, naviâ€" gation, meteorology, ~airâ€" manship â€" all the basic skills a good pilot must learn â€" as well as leadership, drill and ceremonial, aircrew survival, aircraft identificaâ€" tion, aerodrome structures, and a host of additional training. Last winter, Lau applied for an Air Cadet League of Canada flying scholarship, one of the most soughtâ€"after advanced specialty training courses in Canada. Of the more than 300 applicants in Ontario this year, only 70 were selected for this prestiâ€" gious award. Imagine Lau‘s delight to learn he was one of them. The flying scholarship candidates all arrived in early July at one of four flight training centres in Ontario, located in Waterloo/Breslau, London and the Huron Park site of the old RCAF Station Centralia. + They all spent long hours studying volumes of written material and honing the intricate skills of fying. During the sixâ€"week course, the cadets accumulated an average of 45â€"50 hours of flyâ€" ing time in qualifying for their â€" Transport â€" Canada Private Pilot License. On Aug. 17, Lau and his flying scholarship compatriâ€" ots journeyed _ to _ the Mountain View Detachment of Canadian Forces Base Trenton to participate in the 2001 Central Region Air S \m Cadet Wings Parade. It was a landmark day as the fledgling pilots received their wings before several hundred proud parents and friends, a day they will remember for the rest of their lives. For the future, Lau looks forward to university or colâ€" lege "to study either comâ€" puter science or graphic design, or pursue a career as a commercial pilot," he said. The flying scholarship program is one of the longestâ€"standing projects of the 60â€"yearâ€"old Air Cadet League of Canada and the Department of National Defence, national sponsors of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. One of the best known graduates of the flyâ€" ing scholarship program is Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield, who acknâ€" owledges, "cadets taught me how to fly. I never knew how high it would take me." The Royal Canadian Air Cadets welcome young peoâ€" ple aged 12â€"18 to its comâ€" munityâ€"based youth proâ€" gram focusing on citizenâ€" ship, leadership and physiâ€" cal fitness. In due course, many will qualify for flight training themselves and folâ€" low in the footsteps of Chris Hadfield and Daniel Lau.
