This on going program is designed to ensure that the hydrants will operate properly when needed. This year‘s program will involve all hydrants in the City and should be completed by the end of November. This maintenance program is quite routine. However, it may cause some temporary inconveniences such as poor water pressure and in some cases, coloured water. If coloured water is detected, please open a cold, hard water tap and allow the water to run a few minutes until it clears. This situation is temporary. City of Waterloo Utilities and the City of Waterloo Fire Department thank you for your coâ€"operation and understanding. Although the City is responsible for most of the trees‘ maintenance it can‘t possibly ensure that the trees are continually watered. We need your assistance. The Threat â€" Dry summer conditions The dry summer conditions we have been experiencing in Waterloo make it difficult for young trees to establish and thrive, and these same conditions also stress established trees. As a Community We have invested time, energy and financial resources into establishing an urban forest within our community. The urban forest, especially those trees planted within the past 5 years or so within the right of way, are particularly threatened by the droughtâ€"like conditions we are currently experiencing. The trees in your immediate community may not survive without the assistance of your household. WHAT TO DO: During the tree‘s first year: W Soak the trees two to four hours twice a week for the first two to three months weekly thereafter for the first year. The roots must not be allowed to dry out. During subsequent years: & Soak the trees 2 â€" 4 hours, twice a month. CAUTION: It is best to allow water to frickle lightly to prevent flooding and to ensure that the roots receive enough oxygen to permit growth. W Water from your rain barrels any day! w Only water your trees by means of a hose or other attachment connected to the municipal water system when allowed to do so under byâ€"law #90â€"62. That is to say, municipal addresses having ever, numbers may water on even numbered calendar days, odd numbered municipal addresses on odd numbered calendar days and always during the cooler hours Notice is hereby given that an application is being made to the Council of the City of Waterloo for an exemption to the City of Waterloo Noise Byâ€"law #78â€"79 which prohibits amplified sound between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The applicant is the Wilfrid Laurier University, Students‘ Union, 75 University Avenue West, Waterioo who is requesting an exemption as follows: To permit amplified sound/music from 9:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. during their 2001 Orientation scheduled for Thursday, September 6, 2001. The application will be presented to City Council on August 13, 2001 in the Council Chambers, Waterloo City Centre, 100 Regina Street South, Waterloo. Anyone wishing to speak on this matter should contact the City Clerk, Waterloo City Centre, 100 Regina Street South, Waterloo at 747â€"8549 no later than 4:30 p.m., Thursday, August 9, 2001. Questions regarding this event should be directed to Phil Champagne, Programming & Promotions Manager, Wilfrid Laurier University, 884â€"0710, extension 3335. In the past, the City of Waterloo has identified problems with both old and new water valves which require repair. If the valve is located in your driveway and a repair is necessary, it will likely require excavating an area around the valve. An unsightly patch could result in your brand new driveway if you do not call for an inspection. â€" If an excavation in a paved driveway cannot be avoided, we will patch the area to the highest standard; however, we will not replace the entire driveway. Please call us three weeks prior to paving your driveway so that we may inspect any valve which may be present. Do not assume your driveway contractor will arrange this. Many times they don‘t. Thank you. CALL BEFORE YOU PAVE 886â€"2310 : of 7 am â€" 10 am and 7 pm â€" 11 pm. PLEASE CALL US FIRST!!!
