Local students buzzing with excitement as Spelling Bee of Canada draws near ow do you spell consternaâ€" Hliun’! More than a 100 local participants from Grade 1 to Grade 8 will learn the spelling and meaning of the word at the area‘s first Spelling Bee of Canada competition being held this weekâ€" end at the the University of Waterloa. The Spelling Bee of Canada is an â€" educational | organization founded in 1987 to promote literaâ€" cy outside of the regular schaool curriculum by focusing on English language basics. It harks back to a time when vocabulary was tested in classâ€" room competitions, and students won prizes for their mastery of language. Gold stars will be replaced by trophies, prizes and scholarships for the young wordâ€" smiths. It‘s an idea that‘s been very sucâ€" cessful in other jurisdictions in Ontario, said Spelling Bee of Canada president Julie Spence. Her organization oversees the competition from Ottawa to Hamilton, culminating in a provinâ€" cial championship final held in Toronto June 3 at Metro Hall. "Our focus is on learning," said Spence about the founders of the competition. "We‘re devoted to enhancing the spelling ability of young people, improving their grammar and improving their vocabulary." In the U.S., spelling bees have grown to become international competitions featuring children from around the world. "Whenever it gets dramatic, I love it," said Spence. "It tells me _ "All the children are winners just by participating." _ Another difference between the Spelling Bee of Canada comâ€" petition and other word chalâ€" lenges is that after the first couple of rounds it moves to a tieâ€"breaker from a manual word list that all the competitors were allowed to study. : + Be adventurous.
