Artistic director Howard _ Dyck, _ recently named to the Order of Canada, will conduct the concert. This performance will mark another milestone in the growing list of local premieres by the KW Philharmonic Choir, and it promises to be another memorable musical occaâ€" sion. Dyck, who has been the choir‘s artistic director since 1972, said recently, "Learning this great 19th century masterpiece has been an exciting adventure for us. We‘re certain that the listeners too will fall under its spell." The choir, recognized nationally for its sumptuous choral tone and polished musical performances, is the ideal choral vehicle to take on Dvorak‘s challenging and deeply emotional score. Marcel Meaulieu Heidi Klassan Dvorak‘s music, for all its complexity, _ nevertheless achieves its â€" expressive impact through deceptively simple means. There is in particular, a profound sense of yearning which is apparâ€" ent _ on _ every _ page. Beginning in the depths of sorrow, as befits the subject matter, the work gradually progresses to a state of serenity and even joy. In this respect, Stabat Mater surely mirrors the irrepressible optimism and sunny dispoâ€" sition of the composer. Antonin Dvorak, the son of a humble Czech butcher who rose to become director of the Prague Conservatory, was always able to commuâ€" nicate his musical ideas easâ€" ily and spontaneously. "In spite of the fact that 1 have moved about in the great world of music," he once wrote, "I shall remain what I have always been â€" a simple Czech musician." Blyth Festival gives an inch â€" or two here‘s going to be a litâ€" I tle extra legroom for some patrons of the Blyth Festival this season. In an effort to make the hisâ€" toric Blyth Memorial Hall more comfortable, the festiâ€" val is actually taking out one row of seats from the centre section and adjusting the remaining rows to add extra space. Because there is a resultâ€" ing loss of revenue, the festiâ€" val is introducing twoâ€"tiered ticket pricing. These "preâ€" ferred seats" will cost $3 more than seats located at the side, the back section or very front of the theatre that will remain a bargain at last year‘s prices. The sacred cantata Stabat Linda Maguire Mark Dubois Mater had its origin in almost unimaginable per sonal tragedy. Within two years, 1875 to 1877, Dvorak experienced the successive deaths of his three young children. The writing of Stabat Mater was the comâ€" poser‘s means of coming to terms with this devastating loss. The text is a sequence of heartfelt meditations attribâ€" uted to the 13th century lay Franciscan Jacopo da Todi This extended poem, which Dvorak divided into 10 secâ€" tions, reflects on the Mother of Jesus as she weeps over her son hanging on the cross. Rather than a dramatic depiction of the Golgotha events, Dvorak‘s setting is a psychological _ meditation and an invitation to particiâ€" pate in the act of suffering. For Dvorak, a practising Catholic, it was also a prayer for the eternal salvation of the soul. The discernible luminosity and increasing joy as the work progresses reflects the Marian tradition which rests confident that sincerely uttered prayers do not go unanswered. The composer himself conducted â€" Stabat Mater many times in Europe, England and the United States, and in particular in his homeland, including performances in Prague when his wife sang the alto solo. After _ the _ personal tragedy she and her husâ€" band had endured, it was she who knew better than anyone else what she was singing about and for whom. A _ performance _ of Dvorak‘s Stabat Mater is invariably a major musical event. To reserve tickets, call The Centre In The Square box office at 578â€"1570. Prices are $21, $24 and $27 with a discount for students and seniors. Children 12 and under pay only $7. Visit the choir on â€" the web . at www.kwphilharmonic.com. The _ price _ increase applies to patrons who purâ€" chase tickets for one show at a time only. Voucher buyers will be given the best availâ€" able seats regardless of price. Both options offer substantial savings to the customer when compared to single ticket prices. And Voucher Pack buyers do not have to decide which play they are going to see, or which performance they are going to attend in advance. They simply pay for four admissions to the theatre, and then make their reserâ€" vations whenever they are ready. For more informaâ€" tion, call the box office at 1â€" 877â€"862â€"5984.
