he _ University _ of TWalerloo has honâ€" oured seven students for their volunteer activities which have made both the campus and local commuâ€" nity a better place to live. UW honours 7 students for volunteer activities The â€" seven _ students, picked by a selection comâ€" mittee, have received the President‘s Circle Awards for Volunteerism. The awards were established in 1997 to recognize the significant contributions of students in volunteer work on campus and in the local community. This year‘s winners are: Sylvia Louise Rodriguez Rodriguez is a thirdâ€"year student in the honours preâ€" health/preâ€"optometry proâ€" Her list of volunteer work includes contributions as a "Women in Science" ambasâ€" sador, emergency departâ€" ment volunteer, science oriâ€" entation leader, math tutor in high school, menu assisâ€" tant, and sales assistant at St. Mary‘s Hospital. As well, she has been an active and enthusiastic parâ€" ticipant in the shadow proâ€" gram for international stuâ€" dents. The program helps new international students with â€" cultural adjustment and acts as interpreters and resource persons. She is an accomplished flamenco dancer who alone and with her flamenco dance group has performed at â€" multiâ€"cultural events, schools, universities, nursâ€" ing homes, Canada Day celâ€" ebrations _ and _ charity events. Stewart, a Federation of Students viceâ€"president, is a fourthâ€"year math student. His volunteer contributions in the faculty of mathematâ€" ics include: faculty class representative, speaker of math council, viceâ€"president of finance, office manager, Pizza Day director, coâ€"direcâ€" tor of the endowment fund, orientation leader for two years and writer for Math news. As well, he‘s a member of the UW senate and board of governors, and was the founder of the UW Debate Society and president of the Imprint board at a time when the newspaper was operating without an editorâ€" inâ€"chief for several months. Stewart is chair of the Resident Life Community Outreach program, which has a goal of raising more than $30,000 for the Betty Thompson Youth Centre. He is also a member of the Kâ€"W Philharmonic Choir and another choir that perâ€" forms for charity George Roter Roter is a master‘sâ€"degrec student in mechanical engi neering and one of the four Robin Stewart founding members of the new onâ€"line student news and information website uwstudent.org. He is also a varsity baseâ€" ball player and a volunteer in the Team Up program, which sends university athâ€" letes into local schools, comâ€" munity groups and minor sports â€" organizations . to speak about keys to success. As well, Roter launched a program called Engineers Without Borers, which aims to solve technological probâ€" lems in developing counâ€" tries. 0 Te Allan Bell Bell has just completed his 3B term in Kinesiology together with a long stream of volunteer work in the medical and paramedical fields. At UW, he has volunâ€" teered as a physiotherapist‘s assistant in the local SOS Sports Medicine Clinic and in a Sport‘s Medicine Clinic in Toronto. He has served two terms as both chair and council representative _ on _ the Waterloo Coâ€"operative Residence. Besides â€" working â€" last summer, Bell volunteered once a week in the emerâ€" gency room of St. Joseph‘s Mercy Hospital, where he spent a lot of his time with patients and patients‘ famiâ€" lies. Brandy Duchesne Duchesne is a partâ€"time arts student who volunteers for the Volunteer Action Centre and Child Find Ontario. For three years she served on the board of directors of Kâ€"W Accessâ€"Ability. With Child Find, Duchesne is responsible for working with parents whose children are about to be fingerprinted, helping them complete the forms and understand the process. At the Volunteer Action centre, Brandy volunâ€" teers as an office receptionâ€" ist and clerical assistant, as well as providing informaâ€" tion to prospective volunâ€" teers. Salim is in his last year of applied health sciences â€" the recreational studiesâ€" business option. Salim is a Waterloo Warrior basketball star who spends most of his free time on the court helping others to â€" learn, â€" improve â€" and understand the sport. He was the director of the Fourth Annual Kâ€"W Viper, University of Waterloo Breakaway Basketball Tournament involving 350 young allâ€"star athletes, 50 coaches and 50 volunteers As well, he was head coach of the Kâ€"W Viper Atom Minor Bantam allâ€"star team for three years and coach of the Twin City Spinner Wheel Omar Salim He was founder and developer of the Courtice Youth Basketball Program, which helps youth between six and 17 develop basketâ€" ball skills as well as life and health skills. Chair Basketball Team He is also a coach referee and activity programmer for schools in the Kitchenerâ€" Waterloo and Durham area. He has worked as a youth counselor at Simcoe Hall Settlement house and is an active participant in the Power to Choose Assembly Program, which delivers positive messages to youth and encourages them to participate in interactive sport clinics. Witmer is a fourthâ€"year student in social developâ€" ment studies and has spent her volunteer time in chalâ€" lenging situations. She has worked in a famâ€" ily home with a profoundly disabled child, providing patterning techniques and brain stimulating activities to attempt to increase mobility and overall wellâ€" being for a young girl.
