Millennium Recreation Park More ice time could mean more skaters and more medals ike figure skaters and I hockey players, speed katers, too, require more ice time than is curâ€" rently available "Speed skating is an ice sport that has seen very little ice time in Waterloo rinks for a variety of reasons," says Howie Dietrich, City of Waterloo team leader of recreation services. Besides a lack of available ice time, equipment storage has also been a significant problem. Those problems will be solved very soon. . es The development of the Millennium Recreation Park‘s multiâ€"purpose facility has taken these problems and those facing other groups into consideration, says Dietrich. And as a result, he expects ice sports in the city will grow, attractâ€" ing competitions and speâ€" cial events to the area. In addition to gaining ice time â€" on . the â€" facility‘s Olympicâ€"sized ice surfaces, WLU to host volunteerism symposium The World _ University Service â€" of â€" Canada {(WUSC) will hold its annual regional symposium in the Wilfrid Laurier University science building Feb. 9â€"11. A muchâ€" needed asset, considering the organization‘s plans to buy new skates for its memâ€" bers. Flynn says the club will be running all of its proâ€" grams out of the new comâ€" plex including "Jearn to skate", regular practices and competitions. While the extra ice time will only amount to a couple of hours a week, it‘s a big help according to Flynn. Rosanne Toronchuk of recreation serâ€" vices says Waterloo has hostâ€" ed speed skating events in the past (this year‘s provinâ€" cial short track speed skating championship will take place at the Waterloo Recreation Complex} and she hopes the additional ice time and facilities will help series was established in 1989 to educate members of the Canadian postâ€"secâ€" ondary sector about imporâ€" tant international and local development issues and to foster a sense of solidarity and commitment to local and international developâ€" ment.
