Researchers at St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, have determined that Santa Claus is in excellent physical condition. StFX University researchers dispel myth of rotund St. Nick "The fact that Santa is a big man does not mean he is overweight, unfit or unhealthy," explains departâ€" ment of human kinetics proâ€" fessor Debbie Vossen. "In fact, our research indicates that St. Nick must have gained and maintained a high level of health and fitâ€" ness over the years. This is demonstrated by his ability to remain efficient at delivâ€" ering gifts to so many chilâ€" dren around the world each Christmas Eve." The characterization of Santa as having a belly that shakes when he laughs like a bowiful of jelly comes from the ballad, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, written in 1822. Vossen says this description just doesn‘t fit today‘s Santa. "While this plump image may have been accurate at the time, it‘s endurance for more than a century and a half does not correspond with â€" historical evidence which points to Santa actuâ€" ally improving his fitness level over the years," Vosen "Our research indicates that the number of good girls and boys around the world has increased subâ€" stantially since then, as the world‘s _ population _ has grown. Therefore, today‘s Santa is required to make many more deliveries as well as climb up and down a great many more chimneys before sunrise on Christmas morning. Given this incâ€" reased workload, and the fact that Santa cannot take Christmas Eve off, he must remain illnessâ€"free as well as possess high levels of joint flexibility, muscular strength, â€" muscular endâ€" urance and cardioâ€"respiraâ€" tory fitness. That can only be achieved through regular physical activity and healthy eating." The _ StFX _ University researchers concluded that Santa‘s exercise routine likeâ€" ly involves general aspects of fitness training including stretching, resistance trainâ€" ing and activity to raise his Crosby Audl 1175 Weber St. E., Kitchener www .crosbyywaudi.com 894â€"9300 heart rate. In addition, Vossen suggests that Santa Claus probably partakes in other fitness training activiâ€" ties specific to his job on Christmas Eve. For example, because of the cold, ice and snow characteristic of the North Pole, Santa likely assists his elves in carrying wood in a sack to keep the fires going for warmth, as well as climbing up and down ladders to remove snow from the rooftops in Santa‘s Village. These activiâ€" ties help him to remain conâ€" ditioned for the giftâ€"carrying and chimneyâ€"climbing required of him on Dec. 24. Contrary _ to _ popular belief, the StFX University researchers also determined that Santa is not inclined to snack on cookies and hot chocolate very often. "It‘s much more likely that Santa eats healthy snacks like vegetables with dip, fruit, lowerâ€"fat cheese and yogurt during the year in order to maintain his optiâ€" mum level of health and fitâ€" ness," explains department of human nutrition profesâ€" sor Ann Sullivan. "We feel that Santa Claus eats a balâ€" anced diet. It appears that both Santa and Mrs. Claus have adopted a heartâ€" healthy eating pattern that includes plenty of vegetaâ€" bles, fruit and whole grain cereal products. "On Christmas Eve night Santa does enjoy the occaâ€" sional cookie as a special treat, but children should also consider leaving out other healthy snacks that would give Santa the energy he needs to continue on his. This would include a sandâ€" wich, veggies or fruit." The StFX professor also reminds children to be careâ€" ful not to leave out snacks with mayonnaise or eggs for Santa, as these foods have to be kept refrigerated. "But we could leave a message for Santa to check the refrigeraâ€" tor," she adds. "After all, we don‘t want anything to interfere with his Christmas Eve journey."
