Habitat home means fresh start for Waterloo family She loved the home, but soon found it to be economâ€" ically too much to handle. "I really enjoyed where we were living, but my rent just kept going up and up." Two years ago, with help from her father, Gualtien moved to a semiâ€"detached home in the same neighâ€" bourhood. While that home has served her family‘s needs well, she said her new home will be a happy ending to what was once a sad story. "I‘ve tried to find the best lifestyle for my children and myself, while at the same time helping them to get through school and the divorce," Gualtieri said. "And now that lifestyle is COLUMBIA * AVYVTO, SERVICE 6 Time Winner of CAA Customer Service Award 150 Columbia Street West, * Front Wheel Drive * Suspension * Front End + Mufflers + Brakes * Tune Ups + Cooling System * Tires * Alignment Service + Computerized Engine Analysis * General Repair & Service changing, in many ways. Along with the good news of receiving the new home, Gualtieri said things are looking up in her family‘s personal lives as well. After dealing with an unstable partâ€"time job, her son has now been hired as a millwright in Elmira; and her daughter, after spending last winter working two partâ€" time jobs while completing her OAC school courses, has been accepted at the University _ of _ Western Ontario. "Everything is just comâ€" ing together," Gualtieri said. "It‘s a fresh start, now that the kids are well on their One blemish on what seems a perfect picture, however, has been those who‘ve questioned whether Gualtieri should be granted a home since she is a Habitat Smail Truck Repairs volunteer. She wants to clear up some misconceptions. "Some people say that 1 had an in prior to the deciâ€" sion, but being a volunteer has nothing to do with it," she said. "I still had to go through the whole process from start to finish." That process included falling into the set Low Income Cutâ€"Off range, but yet having enough money to be able to maintain a home. "You can‘t be above that amount," Gualtieri expâ€" She also had to provide a list of references, both perâ€" sonal and professional, showing why she should be chosen. That part of the process really left an impression on Gualtieri‘s heart. "I can actually say I‘ve been part of building a home for my family." â€" Melanie Gualtieri "You try to be a good perâ€" son through life," she said. "But when people give such good references and say such wonderful things about you, the feeling is just unbeâ€" lievable." Habitat home recipient After Habitat made the decision, Gualtier became responsible for putting in 500 sweat equity hours, which are to be made up either on the build site or by helping out in other ways such as selling tickets for Habitat events, assisting at other builds, or working in the Habitat Reâ€"store. She also claimed the onus of paying for both the insurance and mortgage on the home. The only difference is the mortgage is interest free; but if her income increases, the mortgage will increase too. Gualtieri said the agree ment doesn‘t worry her. "I know 1 can maintain it," she said. â€" _ And the location of the home couldn‘t be more ideal. "It‘s a little country, lots of city," she said. 8 What may outshine the home itself, however, is the team effort that‘s gone into making Gualtieri‘s dream a "The volunteers have been fabulous," she said. "I try to thank each of them personally everyday at the work site for all that they‘ve done." The pride Gualtieri herâ€" self will take from the experiâ€" ence is also an added bonus "I can‘t even sum up my emotions," she said. "I can actually say I‘ve been part of building a home for my famâ€" ily from the beginning."
