As the days get warmer more and more people are getting out to enjoy the weather. To do this, they don‘t go to shopping malls, but to green spaces. Laurel Creek Conâ€" 1 live in the Laurelwood neighâ€" borhood and would like to strongly give my opinion that 1 believe the land should be placed as a green space and would encourage the City of Waterloo to do whatever it can in order to make that possible. We do not think that the land that is subject to development should take place. 1t should remain conserved as a green space. 1 am totally opposed to any more land going for building around the Laurel Creek area. 1 am a hiker myself and I feel there is already too much building going on there anyway. And what is there isnt very appealing. So I have to say once again I am totally opposed to anymore land being appropriated for development in that area. Should this fall‘s municipal mBarers | you said it We should be asking how proâ€" posed development on this small strip of land relates to the surâ€" rounding land use. Given it will be located on the edge, as opposed to in the centre of a subâ€" urban landscape, and its isolation from any other such facilities and services, it seems a very poor locaâ€" tion for office and commercial uses. Unless there is a plan to eventually pave over the entire conservation area, this is an odd place to develop such a project. As its name implies, this place is not just a park, but a conservation area. Laurel Creek is a sanctuary to many kinds of wildlife, in the water, on the banks and in the surrounding landscape. As urban sprawl encroaches on every site, this preserve is increasingly threatened. Now we are told the authority feels the need to sell off a small parcel of land, which is eventually going to be cut off by the Westmount extension through the university lands to join Northfield Drive. The Grand River Conservation Authority has asked that this piece of land be reâ€" zoned to allow the development. There are two important quesâ€" tions to ask about such developâ€" ment. One involves appropriate use of such land if it is developed, the second involves the environâ€" mental impact of such developâ€" ment on an already compromised ecological system we say we value. You cannot deal with such a precious legacy pieceâ€" meal! You also have to take into account the entire environmental picâ€" ture and not separate it into meaningâ€" less little sections. The current studies being done by the GRCA do not look at This insult compounded the real injury done years before to the creek ecology when Bearinger Road was straightened and any natural corridor between the conservation area and the environmental reserve running through the University of Waterloo‘s north camâ€" pus was completely destroyed. Patrick Bergeron I am very much against the sale of land by the Grand River Conservation Authority and 1 definitely hope that they do not sell it and that it is kept for public use. This land as years go by will become more and more vital to the community. Now it is time save it, not Keep it for public use Its up to us as citizens and residents to ensure this proposal is very carefully scrutinized and that no action is taken until such questions are satisfactorily answered. The real bossthere is not the GRCA or even the city, it is us. It is up to us to call these people to account. What is the longâ€"range plan for this area? We know the University of Waterloo has a plan for the eventual development of most of its north campus. Does the city of Waterloo have a longâ€"range plan? Or does it wait for each developer to come along and destroy each remaining natâ€" ural space one at a time with no conâ€" sideration of the larger implications? how to repair the existing damage, but how to minimize further damage. With the population growing and so much of the land being taken up with development, houses apartments and so on, I think we defiâ€" nitely need this green space to be kept in our area. The land belongs to Grand River Conservation Authority, and they can do with it as they please. Who wouldâ€" n‘t sell it to the highest bidder? Don‘t we all live in houses on lots that were once a pristine nature? We all know that the mighty dollar always wins at the end.
