While the local health department is still working with local universities to come up with some local numbers, Fisber said the Canadian Camâ€" Firstâ€"year students and stuâ€" dents in residence were also the most likely to engage in binge drinking. More than 70 per cent of students in resiâ€" dence reported that they had five or more drinks in a sitting than students in any other type of housing. pus Survey is representative of local situation. "It‘s very timely," he said. "It On average, â€" students reported consuming five or more drinks twice per month, and eight or more drinks once per month. The most frequent consequences of binge drinkâ€" ing were hangovers, questionâ€" able conduct, memory loss and missing classes. The results showed that 62.7 per cent of students reported drinking five or more drinks in a single occasion, while another 34.8 per cent reported drinking eight or more drinks in a single sitting since the beginning of the school year in September. The Centre conducted a Canadian Campus Survey in the fall of 1998 that asked 7,800 undergraduate students in 16 universities across Canada about their drinking habits. The results of the study were released last month. "As we tried to bring the safe drinking guidelines to them, we recognized the biggest problem for that age group is binge drinking," said Fisher. "We know that a lot of injuries and secondary effects like unwanted sex and getting into fights happens when people consume more than five drinks." Safe drinking guidelines recâ€" ommend people have no more than two alcoholic drinks a day, with a maximum of 14 drinks a week for men and nine drinks a week for women. While universityâ€"aged stuâ€" dents didn‘t tend to consume more than 14 drinks in one week, they did tend to drink more than six drinks in a single sitting, the study concluded. Pat Fisher, a health promoâ€" tion officer with the region, said health departments across the province were already worâ€" ried about 19â€" to 25â€"yearâ€"olds and their susceptibility to abusing alcohol. Local health department campaign targets binge drinking among university students The Waterloo Region comâ€" munity health department is launching an aggressive camâ€" paign targeting binge drinking among universityâ€"aged stuâ€" dents in light of concerns raised by a study conducted by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Chronicle Staff gives a really good up to date picture of what‘s going on. "It‘s clear that each campus has its own culture, but 1 think the firstâ€"year students living in residence, as the report shows, are at the highest risk of binge drinking episodes. That‘s really common." Fisher said what drives the drinking is a common behef that everybody else is doing it. Research has confirmed this misconception is prevalent at U.S. colleges.
