Let bar/restaurant owners offer something for everyone Our family has been operab mg a large hnsloncal building In uptown Waterloo for aver IO years lt Consists of five licensed rooms including an upscale restaurant and brew- pub, a tulliards room, a pub- style bar with an elevated out- door patio, an entertainment lounge, and the Penalty Box sports room My husband, our iour khll- dren, and myself work 12-14 hours a day, everyday, srx to seven days a week m order lo build and mammm our cliem lele. Our business philosophy has always been to provide our customers with the best ser- vice, facilities and atmosphere possible. For the last 20 years we have not stopped 1enoyat- ing and improving our estab- lishment In order lo give our customers the best. Customers from all walks of life have always been our source of revenue, and hence our livelihood. Since 1987 our patrons in the restaurant have requested, if not demanded, more and more smoke-free area. We obliged to their requests by creating a com- pletely enclosed room with glass doors to accommodate both the customers who chose to smoke and those who did not. Years before the smoking bylaw was ever discussed, our restaurant was smoke free. Today, the smoking room sits empty, abandoned by the smokers who no longer dine here and by all the non-smok- ers who promised to take their place. The public is not obligated to visit or spend money in our establishment. The public can decide for themselves where to go or not lo go. The smoking bylaw unfairly prohibits smole ing in privately owned buss, nesses that are frequented by people who freely choose lo do so. Who are these politicians lo dictate their beliefs on to us? In all the years managing a we cesslul restaurant and bar, never have we discriminated against customers because of colour, race, religion and/or appearance Now we have to discriminate-we are forced to discriminate against smokers. l was born m a communist country Hitler had a campaign against smoking and dunking during 1938; he was a thctator Is this what our government IS (t),tigiitiittiii Mun Wrd ”-5, Thurs N Fr, W8, Sat 104 FACTORY SHOWROOM 21 Allen St. W. 5351000 today, slowly creeping Into the hees of the Canadian people with more and more govern- ment controls? In 1949 my family arrived m Malartic, Quebec, My father had to work m the gold mtne for three years to pay the boat mp over from the Ukrame My mother, upon arriving med and asked my lather why had he brought her to the; "bush and cabin place " My father consoled her by saying “Dom worry, this Is Canada, here we can work for ourselves and be successful!" With the; in mind, I question the current attitudes held by our politicians. We as a people vote for our politicians and we put our trust in them. We trust them to run our titles and our country with respect for the people who live and work here. We trust them to help our businesses in the Waterloo Region: businesses that supply many people with jobs and keep the economy growing. We employ 90 peo- ple and six family members. Many of our employees are stu- dents and it is by working within our establishment that they are able to Mance their university or college educa- tion. I save This is a priyately owned building, thereforeilt,e govem- ment has no right to dictate to us how our business should be run. Are they trying to destroy this industry so that they can then build casinos where they will perhaps allow smoking in free mobile service anywhere in KW area. - __ - pick-up and delivery shuttle service, We take care of Insurance claims by doing the paper work CL2c' L?)" ,lll'llisli Fine Home Furnish . 3 locations to serve you in Kitchener-Waterloo sWe:_c-e em 'iiit'itti, 300 Manitou om 743.2555 in Uptown Waterloo , "We're more than just tables and chairs!" . It seems as if the local government IS acting like a handful of arrogant Hihers. Hang In their lancy board rooms, they seem to have deaf ears, for they do not hear the mes from the local busmesses They do not seem lo under stand how greatly we are being affected by this ridiculous bylaw Only two months have passed Since the bylaw was passed and we have lost the money of our regular clien» iele--money that Is not being replaced by the non-smokers who promised to fill their places, Thousands and thou- sands of dollars in revenue have been lost. Customers call me and say, "Dont give up the Mu!" They also say they miss coming to the Huether, but if they do come they cannot enjoy themselves like they used to, Instead. they are stay- ing home because the Huether just does not feel like home to them anymore. They also tell me that if they do go out, they are going to Brantford once a week because they can smoke there. Unfortunately, they are not the only people making the drive to Brantford. The 1estau- rants there are Med with K-W patrons and the casino is so full that sometimes one can hardly move around, Some people come to our Itslauram on Friday or Satur- day and comment, "took how Road West 579.1980 ON YOUR WINDSHIELD CLAIM full they are, why are they com- plaining about the bylaw?" These people should stt In our place from ll am to 1 pm. Monday to Thursday to really see what the bylaw has done. What once was a healthy bust- ness for all the rooms m the hotel for the past 20 years has changed. The other rooms rematn empty and qutet. The restaurant IS only 1/5 of the building. Where are all the customers that we had the pleasure to say, "Hello" to and "Thank you for your support" for so many years? We do not want to leave the impression that we are advo- cating smoking or unhealthy lifestyles. In fact, we have taken many steps to provide our non-smoking customers with smoke-hee areas and we regularly adjust our menus to accommodate those who desire healthy dining choices. What we do advocate is allow- ing adults the freedom to make their own choices with [sped to the privately owned estate lishments they wish to attend. O Canada-Glorious and Free! Governments should mind their own business and let us, private building and business owners, mind ours. The use of tobacco is legal in Canada and it is surly not the only health risks undertaken by members of our society. And until the government addresses these, they should refrain from passing bylaws (Continued on page a) call tor quote YOUR CHOICE 1iB8riff0.lP,t 135'in Auto Bod 3551815535 Complete Collision and Refinishing Service d430 Albert Street, Waterloo $8l g" Ear Care " .71, TTIE VAC CONNECTION E".
